‘Seoul should not allow Navy to seek compensation for delay’
Governor also hints at possible presidential run in press conference


The governor says that, in the interests of harmony with the residents of Gangjeong, the national government must withdraw the Navy’s right to indemnity regarding the naval base that was built there.

Governor Won Heeryong made the comments at a Wednesday press conference at the Seoul Press Center. He argued that it was difficult to hold the residents responsible for the delayed construction of the installation. He said that in order to allow them to return to their normal lives, the government should not allow the navy to seek compensation from them for the delay.

Won also touched upon the visa waiver program for foreigners entering Jeju. He said that local officials were working on a way to improve the system and that abolishing it altogether was not the best solution.

In response to a question about running for the presidency, Won said he is focusing on his duties as Jeju governor, but he left the door open to the possibility. He said that, should he be certain that that was the wish of the people, he would heed their calls to run for the highest office in the land.

원 지사는 오늘 서울 프레스센터에서 열린 관훈토론회에서 해군기지 공사지연이 주민의 반대 활동에만 책임이 있는지 확인할 수 없다며 강정주민들이 일상으로 돌아갈 수 있도록 해군은 구상권 청구를 철회해야 한다고 말했습니다.

무사증 제도는 현재 제도개선을 추진 중이라며 무조건 폐지만이 능사가 아니라고 강조했습니다.

대권 도전 의사를 묻는 질문에는 제주도지사 업무에 우선 충실하고 국민이 필요로 한다는 확신이 선다면
