4 Jeju sites selected for UNESCO World Natural Heritage bid
Results expected in about 2 years



Officials have selected four sites in Jeju for which to pursue additional UNESCO World Natural Heritage designation.

The four sites are the caves in the upper region of Geomunoreum, Suwolbong in Gosan-ri, and Hallim-eup’s Chagwido and Socheongul Cave. Another location that was considered, the Yongmeori Coast, was dropped from the final list due to nearby commercialization.

The province will submit the list to the Cultural Heritage Administration, which will then apply for the UNESCO designations.

After the application is made, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources will review the documents. IUCN specialists will also visit Jeju for an on-site inspection. The whole process is expected to take roughly two years.

세계자연유산 추가 후보지 4곳 확정

제주도가 세계자연유산의 추가 등재를 준비하는 가운데 최종 후보지 4곳이 결정됐습니다.

제주특별자치도는 세계자연유산지구 확대 타당성 조사 용역에서 구좌읍 거문오름 상류동굴군과 한경면 수월봉과 차귀도, 한림읍 소천굴 등 4 곳을 최종 후보지로 확정했습니다.

당초 후보지로 거론됐던 안덕면 용머리 해안은 주변 지역 상업화로 제외했습니다.

제주도는 올 연말쯤 문화재청에 세계자연유산 추가 등재 후보지를 신청할 계획입니다.
