Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Back to Normal
  • With the aftermath of the heavy snowfall and cold snap behind us, life on Jeju has mostly returned to normal. Joseph Kim has more. [slug] Yeon-dong, Jeju City After the heavy snow and cold spell crippled Jeju, restoration work began and people have managed to return to their everyday lives. [slug] Removing snow on the main roads, traffic returns to normal. Here is an aerial view of Jeju. After the record snowfall, the downtown area of Jeju turned into a city covered in snow. Heavy snow accumulated on the rooftop of buildings, roads and playgrounds of schools. After working non-stop to remove the snow, paralyzed roads began to function again and cars began picking up speed. In the mountainous areas, where clearing snow is far more time consuming, we see the beauty of winter among the trees. Winter mountain hikers are fascinated by the picturesque scenery made by the record snowfall. On top of several major oreums, untouched snow caps the volcanic cones. Despite ceaseless snow removal work, there still remain a few scars from the winter storm. [slug] Bonggae Landfill, Jeju City [camera] Ko Moon-su Heavy snow collapsed the rooftop of a water recycling facility in the Bonggae landfill in Jeju City. Also, a greenhouse that protected crops from the cold wave was severely damaged from the heavy snow. [reporter] Joseph Kim While Jeju froze over due to the heaviest snowfall recorded in 32 years, due to the efforts to clear the snow coupled with the warmer weather, much of the island was able to get back to their daily routine. • KCTV: Busy Times at the Airport
  • In some related news, now...local authorities usually focus on getting as many people as possible to the island, but last week, it was just the opposite. Everyone at the airport was working feverishly to get the tens of thousands of people that had been stranded here off Jeju ASAP. Mike Laidman reports. A record-breaking amount of snow hit the island over the weekend, and has finally all been cleared from the Jeju International Airport runway. A fully-loaded airplane takes off with a thunderous roar, and soon, another slows its descent and comes in to land. There’s a constant stream of aircraft taking off and landing, dressed in the liveries of not only Korean, but many international airlines, as well. With the night flying restriction at the (김포) Gimpo, (김해) Gimhae, and (제주) Jeju International Airports lifted, the runways at the three airports were busy for 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. During the busiest time on Tuesday night, there were 34 planes sharing the Jeju Airport’s single runway. [Camera] Kim Seung-cheol There was a plane either taking off or landing an average of every one minute and forty seconds during this time, meaning the maximum number of hourly aircraft was at its limit. For the Jeju International Airport, this maximum is 34, referring to the number of planes that can be taxiing on the runway at once. On Wednesday, more than 580 flights took off and landed, about 100 more than usual. INTERVIEW Representative / Jeju International Airport The runway capacity is determined by national authorities. We cannot exceed the limit. We were allowed up to 34 flights per hour. [Reporter] Mike Laidman To help get the thousands of stranded passengers home, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport permitted night flights between Jeju Island and the Gimpo and Gimhae International Airports until 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
