Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: New Route ‘Tough’ for Bus Drivers
  • When Seogwipo bus terminals were merged in 2013, two intercity routes were also merged. That made it convenient for riders, but very challenging for bus drivers. The route is long and hilly. It is labor intensive and the long driving hours exhausting, especially when snow and ice cover the roads. Mike Balfour has more. [slug] Bus routes merged in 2013 Buses No. 781 and 782 start at the intercity bus terminal in Jeju City and make stops on the 5.16 Road and in Jungmun, Seogwipo then return to the starting point. The province made the new loop route when it overhauled bus routes in 2013 following the merger of Seogwipo bus terminals. It's convenient for both of tourists and residents because they can reach the Jungmun Tourism Complex in Seogwipo and Seongpanak on Hallasan Mountain without transfer. However, the integration of the two separate routes has brought harmful side effects. ### C.G IN It took between one hour and one and a half hours for a bus to make a one-way trip between the terminals in Jeju City and Seogwipo before the change. After the change, it takes about two and a half hours to make the loop. ### C.G OUT The new route includes the hilly 5.16 Road and the (평화로) Pyeonghwa-ro expressway, which exhausts bus drivers. SYNC Intercity bus driver To keep on schedule during the morning and evening rush hours, we can’t take any short breaks before heading back to Jeju City. We don’t have even a minute to smoke at the terminal in Seogwipo. It’s worse, and dangerous, on snowy days. " The island’s ever-changing weather is another challenge to the drivers. [camera] Moon Ho-seong Recently an intercity bus slipped off the road in icy conditions on 5.16 Road and hit a tree. 16 people were injured at the accident. The intercity bus operator acknowledges the difficulties, but it has no alternatives because there is no proper starting or end points for the route in Seogwipo. SYNC Bus company representative The buses run every 10 minutes now, so if we can find a place for drivers to park and rest for 50 minutes before coming back to Jeju City, they can take a break. We haven’t found such a place, though. • Real estate purchases by non-Koreans slow in 2015
  • Real estate purchases by non-Koreans slow in 2015 Foreigners own 0.82% of Jeju buildings The provincial government says real estate purchases by non-Koreans slowed throughout 2015. New data shows that purchases continued to fall after the first quarter last year, with the total number of transactions reaching 734 and accounting for some 96,000 square meters… down 10 percent year-on-year. Experts have attributed the drop to the MERS outbreak and a lack of resort housing sales under the investment-based permanent residency program. Foreigners own about 2,500 of the buildings in Jeju. That’s 0.82 percent of the total, and they amount to some 376,000 square meters of floorspace. Most of the foreign-owned buildings are accommodation facilities and multi-unit housing complexes.
