Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Province to train workers for major developments 60 people to be selected for overseas language training The provincial government is pushing ahead with its plan to produce a well-trained labor force for the projects run by major foreign investment companies in Jeju. The province, the Jeju Free International City Development Center, and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea will select 60 college students and graduates from the low-income bracket, and then pay for overseas language training for them. Upon the completion of that studying, the provincial government will work as a mediator for them in finding jobs on the island with big developers. Beginning in March, the three organizations will also work together to train workers for management support, maintenance, and other positions at theme parks and recreational facilities. Landing Jeju, the developer of the Myths and History Theme Park, is planning to hire more than 4,000 islanders beginning in the latter half of 2016. For instance, there are now 272 more electric vehicles on island roads this year, far fewer than the target number of 1,515, but the government said that project was proceeding satisfactorily. 2. Education ‘No conversion of high schools’ The provincial office of education says the planned conversion of special-purpose high schools into standard schools and the opening of a new standard high school will no longer be considered. Yonhap 1. North Korea ‘U.S., China won’t accept N. Korea as nuclear power’ Yonhap is reporting on remarks by the U.S. national security advisor. Susan Rice said Monday that the United States and China are working together for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and won't accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed country. 2. Society S.   • Locally-grown jujubes being shipped to market Variety of Chinese dates going for \15,000 per kilogram A variety of large Chinese dates, or jujubes, that were grown here on the island are now being shipped to market. According to the Western Regional Center of Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services, the so-called “apple jujubes” are now being harvested at farms in (대정) Daejeong and (안덕) Andeok. The average sugar content of the ping-pong ball size fruit is between 13 and 15 degrees Brix. This year’s crop is estimated at five tons.   • Spike in household lending 23% more in new loans in July, compared to June Local households are taking out a lot more in loans. The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea says that new household lending increased by 23 percent in July compared to the previous month to 185.7 billion won. The aggregate amount in mortgages shot up by a factor of three to 97.4 billion won.   • Eastar Jet to begin Jeju-Bangkok service October 1 Daily flights leave Jeju at 9:10 PM Eastar Jet will begin service October first between Jeju and Bangkok, Thailand. It has signed a business agreement with the Jeju Tourism Organization to make one flight daily on the route for the next three years. The budget carrier will use an aircraft with a seating capacity of 183. The flight will depart Jeju at 9:10 p.m. and leave Bangkok at 1:50 a.m. This is the first regular flight service between the two areas.   • 213,000 Chuseok visitors expected 3.6% more than last year Authorities are expecting more than 213,000 people to visit the island over the holiday weekend. The Jeju Provincial Tourism Association’s arrivals estimate for the five days beginning September 25th is 3.6 percent higher than the total from last Chuseok. Saturday is expected to be the busiest day, with some 49,000 people arriving. [CG IN] Korean Wave Industry Leaders Forum launched To keep up the momentum, the culture ministry has launched a policy-making forum. [INTERVIEW] Yoon Tae-yong / Ministry of Culture (Korean) "By gathering the respective leaders, officials and experts, we can discuss the future of Hallyu. This will be based on the "convergence" of various culture genres such as K-Pop, TV dramas or animations with ICT, producing a brand new cultural product." The weekly forum kicked off on Thursday, with industry officials, leaders and members of the public attending the inaugural ceremony. Members of Infinite, a popular K-POP boyband, were instated as the official endorsers of the organizing committee. [CG IN] Korean Wave to be fueled by 'cultural convergence' This was followed by special lectures on the importance of cultural convergence and how to spread it on an international scale.
