Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Shiitake Mushrooms in Season
  • On Hallasan Mountain, it’s that time of year to harvest shiitake mushrooms. The best ones are said to be firm, plump, and carry a strong scent. Joseph Kim has this story. [slug] Hallasan Mountain (900 m above sea level) This forest trail on Hallasan Mountain leads to Handae Oreum (한대오름) which lies 900 meters above sea level. It’s gotten a lot chillier here lately, especially in the mornings and late at night… and the leaves on the trees have started to change color. A walk further in, brings you to an area where you can find mushrooms growing at the foot of the trees. It’s a busy time for farmers, as it’s the harvesting season for shiitake mushrooms. The ones that grow on Hallasan Mountain are known for their high quality due to the natural conditions they grow in. Because of this, the mushrooms are even said to be cultivated by the heavens. The best ones are plump, firm and give off a strong scent. [camera] Kim Yong-min You can enhance the flavor by drying them in the autumn sun. • The Chuseok holidays are nearly upon us, and some people have already started to head for their hometowns. More than 1,000 flights and 24 ferry sailings are scheduled to get people to and from the island, but it’s still very hard to buy tickets. Mike Balfour reports. [slug] Mass exodus to begin Friday The official Chuseok holiday begins on Saturday 26th September, but the annual mass exodus is expected to start a day earlier on Friday 25th, as millions of people head to their hometowns. For the next five days from Friday... … there will be around 1,070 flights out of Jeju Airport… including 43 special flights. That’s 10.2 percent more than the 970 flights during Chuseok in 2014. Compared to a year earlier, the number of seats available is also up 14.5 percent at 184,000. For those traveling by sea, two extra ferries have been added for the routes to and from Jeju, bringing the total number of ferries to 24. [slug] 500-ton ferry Queen Star 2 to begin new route One of them is a 500-ton ferry that will set sail for the first time between Jeju and Wosooyoung(우수영) on Friday. A special traffic measure period has also been designated from September 26 through 29. Additional job training sessions will be offered to final-year high school students looking for employment. SYNC Park Hong-bae / Jeju provincial government In the past, many companies that invested in Jeju prefered to recruit people from outside the island because it was hard to find qualified workers here. But from now on, we will work in close cooperation with local universities and offer the necessary training for students who seek to work for these companies.
