Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • ‘Hallasan home to 10 non-native species of animal’
  • ‘Hallasan home to 10 non-native species of animal’ Research will continue through end of year In more news from the mountain, researchers say Hallasan National Park is home to ten species of non-native animal. The province began a survey of mountain fauna in March. Eight foreign species were confirmed living there. The list includes wild boars, red deer, Formosan deer, wild dogs, wild cats, and squirrels. Scientists are awaiting final, and expected, confirmation of the remaining two species. The population of wild dogs and boars is growing, and that worries local officials. They are concerned about hikers’ safety. The provincial government will study the distribution of the animals through the end of this year. The Hallasan Research Institute performed a similar survey in 2011. It determined then that there were 12 non-native species of animal living on the mountain.

  • Pine wilt discovered high on Hallasan Mountain
  • Pine wilt discovered high on Hallasan Mountain Diseased trees found at elevation of 900 m Forest officials had thought pine wilt only affected trees up to an elevation of 700 meters, so they were surprised when they recently found it at 900 meters above sea level. The provincial government and the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center say they discovered three diseased trees near the entrance to Eorimok on Hallasan Mountain and in another location at an elevation of 730 meters. The Eorimok discovery at 900 meters is the highest point at which pine wilt has ever been found in the nation. The heritage center, the Korea Forest Research Institute, and the Hallasan Research Center will carry out an epidemiological survey, then use the data gained from it to devise a way to prevent pine wilt. They will also expand prevention efforts by inoculating trees at higher elevations.

  • Clean bill of health for Jeju beaches
  • Clean bill of health for Jeju beaches Officials test water, sand quality at 15 beaches Officials say the water and white sand at local beaches have tested clean of contaminants. The Jeju Public Health and Environment Research Institute surveyed 11 designated and 4 undesignated beaches. The water quality and heavy metal level at each was suitable for visitors to enjoy. Specifically, the number of coliform bacteria in local waters stands at just 17 percent of the acceptable level and the number of enterococcus bacteria is just 30 percent. Officials say that means beachgoers can swim with an easy mind.
