Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] Wonder what’s coming up this weekend? Well, wonder no more, dear viewers, for it’s….wait for it...Before I Fall! And Wonder Woman, of course. That intro might have been terrible, but Wonder Woman is not! The first of the DC superhero movies to get glowing reviews is here, and we’re ready to dive right into it. And after that, it’s the mystery-drama Before I Fall - a young-adult movie that, despite its seen-before plot, injects some new life into the idea. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Wonder Woman (2017, Patty Jenkins) Diana of the Amazons leaves her home to fight a war. There is truly a lot riding on Wonder Woman. It’s the latest film to come out of DC’s troubled superhero stable, and with Marvel consistently producing hit after hit, they really need a critical and commercial hit to remain relevant and keep bringing their assembly of characters to the silver screen. Luckily, it looks like Wonder Woman is going to be that movie. An Amazon princess finds her idyllic life on an island occupied only by female warriors interrupted when a pilot crash-lands nearby. After rescuing him, she learns that World War I is engulfing the planet, and vows to use her superpowers to restore peace. The movie, despite being another superhero origin story, feels fresh, even revelatory. This is the first DC movie since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy to deliver on expectations. Gal Gadot gives a great performance as Wonder Woman, and together with director Patty Jenkins, has produced what may be the first superhero movie to really feel like a product of passion. [Slug CG] Before I Fall (2017, Ry Russo-Young) Sam relives a single day and unravels the mystery of her death. Samantha Kingston has everything: the perfect friends, the perfect guy, and a seemingly perfect future. Then, everything changed. After one fateful night, Sam wakes up with no future at all. Trapped reliving the same day over and over, she begins to question just how perfect her life really was. This is pretty tried-and-true, but it still feels fresh here, thanks in part to a strong performance by newcomer Zoey Deutch. It tackles themes of adolescence, growing up, finding a moral compass, and loss, making it a perfect complement to so many of today’s youth. It might not be Groundhog Day, and it’s definitely not without its flaws, but what it does have is still special in its own modern-youth way.
