Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] Let’ start today with a quiz. How do you know summer is here? Because the big blockbusters are starting to roll in one at a time, each and every week. We’re going old-school to start, taking a look at Alien: Covenant. Does this latest chapter in Ridley Scott’s franchise have what it takes to win fans back after the middling Prometheus? Looking even further back to 2002, it’s the return of 8 Mile, the movie about the rise of rapper Eminem. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Alien: Covenant (2017, Ridley Scott) The crew of a colony ship discover a new world, and a threat. Ever since the first sequel to the groundbreaking Alien came around in 1986, the movies have been trying to capture much of what made the original so special. The close-quarters deep-space terror that made the original so refreshing is back here. But let’s see what’s new this time around. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape. While Covenant isn’t going to make you forget about Alien or Aliens, it is a step up over the previous entry, and returns to what made the first couple movies so great: close combat in space with a terrifying creature. Inching closer towards being more of a horror/thriller than sci-fi horror, Alien: Covenant is worth your time, but go in knowing that some franchise knowledge will help you enjoy it even more. [Slug CG] 8 Mile (2002, Curtis Hanson) A young rapper struggles to make it big. No one else wants to go up against both Alien and Guardians at the box office, and so we’re taking a look, way, way back, to 8 Mile. Set against Detroit's hip-hop scene in 1995, the story centers on Jimmy Smith Jr., a young white rapper, who struggles to find his voice. The people of Detroit know '8 Mile' as the city limit - a border. It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy from where and who he wants to be, as he struggles to find the strength and courage to transcend his boundaries. Even though the story itself is pretty familiar, there’s enough meat here to make it worth the ride. Here, the messy emotions of Eminem’s life become an equally riveting drama.

  • ‘President must keep his word regarding Gangjeong’
  • ‘President must keep his word regarding Gangjeong’ Won says Navy’s right to compensation remains island’s most pressing issue Governor Won Heeryong says President Moon Jae-in must keep his pledge regarding the village of Gangjeong. The navy has the right to seek compensation for opposition to the construction of its now-complete base in the village. As a candidate, Moon vowed to get the navy to give up that right. At a Thursday press conference, Won said this is the most urgent issue on the island, and that he will begin discussions to deal with it. The governor added that the resolution of this problem depends on the will of the president and his chief secretaries. He urged them to plan accordingly. In other news, Won belongs to the newly formed Bareun Party, and it fared quite poorly in the presidential election. The governor said that was due to a lack of preparation time, and he vowed to do everything he could to develop it into a conservative party focused on reform.
