Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • ‘Devil weed’ continues to invade Jeju Sargassum horneri from China washing up on local shores Authorities say something must be done to prevent damage from a type of seaweed sometimes referred to as “devil weed” that is floating over from China. Local officials say the Seogwipo Coast Guard and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology discovered the unsightly sargassum horneri through satellite observations of the waters around Ieodo and south of Jeju. Researchers say it is coming from the northern region of the East China Sea. He got 45 percent of the votes in Jeju. The island therefore retains its status as an election barometer ? local voters have correctly picked the president since 1987, the first year of direct presidential elections in the country. Moon began his term Wednesday morning after all the votes were counted and the National Election Commission declared him the winner. Jeju had the lowest voter turnout in the nation ? 72.3 percent.   • After 13 years of challenges and failed starts, the Korea Gas Corporation has begun development of a natural gas supply system in Jeju. It is set to be operational as early as late 2019. Joseph Kim has the details. Report The island has been the only place that is not connected to LNG pipelines among the nation’s 17 major cities and provinces. [slug] Groundbreaking for LNG supply system at Aewol Harbor Ground was broken for a natural gas supply system in Jeju after 13 years of challenges and failed starts. The facilities will be used to supply natural gas to the whole island from the LNG terminal at the Aewol Harbor in Jeju City. Actually, Jeju is Seoul’s last destination for the national natural gas distribution project. LNG is cleaner and more affordable than its thermal counterparts. The price of LNG is 40 percent cheaper than LPG. The Korea Gas Corporation will establish two 45,000 kiloliter storage tanks and eight stations across Jeju to manage 81 kilometers of 20-inch pipes that will be used to supply the natural gas. [slug] LNG for 25,000 households, 260 businesses Once complete, the system will be able to distribute the relatively-affordable natural gas to 25,000 households and 260 local businesses beginning in the latter half of 2019. [slug] LNG-based power plants to produce 300MW of electricity per year The system will also be able to create around 300 megawatts of electricity per year, enough to cover 20 percent of Jeju’s power needs.   • Two horse training centers to be built Province spending \8b on project Two centers will be built in Jeju to train high quality horses. The provincial government has is spending eight billion won on the project. One center will be near the Jeju Livestock Institute, the other will be at the Seogwipo Federation of Livestock Cooperatives feed plant. Work on the 13,000-square meter facility at the livestock institute is will be complete by the end of August. The centers will be used to train animals for horseback riding in general and racing. 55 percent of the 27,000 horses in the nation at the end of last year were trained on the island. 제주 말 거점조련센터 2곳 추진 제주에 우수한 말을 생산 공급하기 위한 거점 조련센터가 2군데 조성됩니다. 제주도는 축산진흥원와 서귀포시축협 사료공장 인근 부지에 80억원을 투입해 마사와 조련장 등을 갖추게 된다고 밝혔습니다. 특히 제주도축산진원내 만3천여 제곱미터에 조성 중인 말 조련센터는 오는 8월 준공을 앞두고 있습니다. 말 조련센터는 농가에서 생산한 말을 체계적으로 조련해 승용마나 경주마로 키울 수 있게 됩니다 제주에서는 지난해 말 기준 전국에 있는 2만7천여 마리의 55%인 만5천여 마리가 사육중입니다.

The Jeju Tourism Organization participated in the Taipei Tourism Expo through Monday, promoting the island with representatives from the local government and the provincial tourism association.   • Chinese sold off Jeju land last year They bought more in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do Chinese nationals are buying more land in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, but selling their holdings here. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, as of the end of last year, Chinese had bought 13 percent more land in the country for a total of some 16 million square meters. The amount they owned in Jeju shrunk by 7.9 percent to about 8.4 million square meters. Chinese investors bought 85.5 percent more land in Gyeonggi-do for a total of 3.5 million square meters, and in Gangwon-do they snapped up 67.1 percent more land for a total of 2 million square meters. 중국인 보유 토지, 제주서 줄고 경기·강원서 늘어 중국인이 보유한 국내 토지가 제주에서 감소한 반면 경기와 강원도에서 크게 늘어난 것으로 나타났습니다. 국토교통부에 따르면 지난해 말 기준 중국인이 보유한 국내 토지 면적은 전년 대비 13% 증가한 천6백9만4천 제곱미터를 기록했습니다. 전국 17개 시·도 가운데 중국인이 지난 2016년 제주에서 보유한 땅은 842만2천제곱미터로 7.9% 감소했습니다. 하지만 경기도와 강원도에서는 각각 85.5%, 67.1% 증가한 350만3천제곱미터, 201만5천제곱미터를 보유한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

Industry representatives say fares on low-cost carriers like Jeju Air, Jin Air, and Busan Air between Jeju and Gimpo on May fifth ranged from an average of 95,000 to 97,900 won. Meanwhile, Asiana charged an average of 113,000 won and Korean Air, 119,200. That translates to savings of just about 20,000 won.
