‘Gulfweed in Jeju is from China’
Researchers announce results of DNA analysis

Researchers have determined that the gulfweed piling up on Jeju shores this year is from China.

The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute analyzed the DNA of samples and concluded that it was identical to gulfweed found in Zhoushan, China.

They said it has traveled on ocean currents from there to here and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.

The researchers warned that the gulfweed surge will likely continue through next month.

제주 유입 괭생이모자반, 중국 분포종과 일치

올해 제주 해안에 밀려온 괭생이모자반은 중국에서부터 유입된 것으로 나타났습니다.

국립수산과학원은 국내에 대량으로 유입된 괭생이모자반에 대해 최근 유전자 분석을 벌인 결과중국 저우산군도에 분포하는 모자반과 염기서열이 99.9% 일치했다고 밝혔습니다.

이에 따라 중국에서 자라던 괭생이모자반이 해류를 따라 우리나라 남해와 제주에 유입된 것으로 보인다고 설명했습니다.

그러면서 다음달까지 괭생이모자반이 계속 유입될 수 있는 만큼 피해 없도록 주의가 필요하다고 당부했습니다.
