Mass of ‘devil weed’ approaching local waters
600 tons of unsightly seaweed has already been collected from island shores

Researchers have discovered a massive colony of sargassum honery, so-called devil weed, approaching coastal waters.

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology discovered the mass of seaweed northwest of the island with the aid of the (천리안) Chollian satellite.

They say it’s too soon to know if it will make it to the coast - winds and ocean currents could direct it elsewhere. They say it’s therefore important to keep monitoring it in different ways.

Over 600 tons of the unsightly seaweed has already been collected from local shores so far this year.

괭생이모자반 제주 북서부 해역 대량 출현

군락을 이뤄 밀집해 있는 괭생이 모자반이 제주 북서쪽 해상에서 대량으로 관측됐습니다.

한국해양과학기술원은 천리안 해양관측위성을 통해 제주도 북서부 해역에 광범위하게 분포해 있는 고밀집 괭생이모자반을 관측했다고 밝혔습니다.

다만, 상륙가능성에 대해서는 앞으로 바람과 해류의 영향에 따라 달라질 수 있기 때문에 위성 관측 뿐만 아니라 현장 모니터링이 필요하다고 조언했습니다.

한편 올 들어 지금까지 제주 해안에서 수거된 괭생이 모자반은 600톤을 넘고 있습니다.
