Children born abroad who come to Korea?commonly referred to as mid-immigration youth?are not few in number, and most struggle to adapt due to language barriers.
Various forms of support are being implemented to help these dual-background students reduce learning difficulties in the classroom.

Bridging Language Gaps in Jeju Schools

This language program began last year at an elementary school in Jeju City.
Students from different grades gather to learn Korean using flash cards.
[Slug] Up to 10 hours of Korean lessons per week
It’s a curriculum designed to improve the language skills of immigrant students who are not yet fluent in Korean.
They can participate for up to 10 hours a week in subjects such as Korean and Social Studies.

The kids can speak fairly well, but if the words or sentences get even slightly more difficult, they tend to struggle with comprehension. That’s why they face many challenges in learning during class time.

아이들이 말은 되게 잘 하는데 조금만 낱말이 어려워지거나 문장이 어려워지면 이해를 잘 못하는 경향이 있어요. 그래서 수업시간에 학습적인 부분에서 많은 어려움을 겪거든요.
Additional support for these students is available to help them adjust to Korean school life.
[Slug] 2025: Korean language classes expand to 3 elementary, 2 middle schools
Last year, Korean language classes were piloted at two schools. Due to their success, the program will be expanded this year to include three elementary schools and two middle schools.
Six regional hub schools will provide support to students in smaller schools or schools with fewer migrant-background students.

To facilitate Korean language learning at any time and in any location, learning interpreters and digital education programs in multiple languages will be provided.

When the teacher is teaching, subtitles in Korean will appear on the side, and for students from the Philippines or Cambodia, subtitles can be shown in their respective languages so they can understand as well.

In addition, support will be provided for programs such as integration camps, which bring together students from migrant and local backgrounds, and motherland visits for children from multicultural families.
[Slug] Over 3,000 multicultural students last year, 4% of all students
The number of multicultural students in the Jeju region exceeded 3,000 for the first time in 2023 and continues to grow steadily, now accounting for 4% of all students in the region.
