Despite a province-wide consumer promotion drive, sentiment around a consumer recession in the region shows little sign of improvement.

According to an analysis by Jeju Province, based on February 2025 industrial activity data from the Korea National Statistical Office, the large retail store sales index fell to 76.6 marking a sharp year-on-year decline of 18.3 percentage points.

The analysis indicates that ongoing political and economic uncertainties, both at home and abroad, have continued to erode consumer confidence.

Jeju Province has acknowledged that a recovery in the local economy will take time. In response, officials say the province will extend its consumer promotion campaign and increase fiscal spending in a bid to boost consumption.
