Jeju’s total number of elementary, middle, and high school students fell by nearly 3,000 in one year. However, student enrollment increased in schools in rural areas.

The Jeju Office of Education says total enrollment for the 2026 school year stands at 78,864. That is down 2,703 from last year, with 36 fewer classes.

The education office says 31 elementary schools posted enrollment gains. It adds that 74 percent of them are concentrated in rural areas, helped by rural school study programs and Jeju-style autonomous school policies.

반면 읍·면지역 학교에서 학생 수가 늘어났습니다. 제주도교육청은 제주남초와 제주북초, 보목초 등 학생 수가 늘어난 초등학교 31개교 가운데 74%가 읍·면지역에 집중돼 농어촌 유학과 제주형 자율학교 정책이 지역 학교 활성화에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 분석했습니다.
