Detection dogs are indispensable at scenes involving explosives or searches for missing persons.

Tank, a police dog with the Jeju Police Special Unit who worked across numerous search operations for seven years, has completed his duties and retired.

Now, he is starting a new life?not as a police dog, but as a companion animal?with a new family.

Inside an office packed with specialized equipment.

A detection dog moves quickly, following the handler’s signals, sniffing around the room.

This is training to locate hidden explosives using scent.

The dog soon stops in front of a box, and signals by wagging his tail.

This is Tank, a police dog with the Jeju Police Special Unit. With his exceptional sense of smell, he has taken part in explosives detection and search-and-rescue missions.

Last year, Tank was deployed to Jeju International Airport after a bomb threat, searching airport terminals.

[Slug] Active at numerous search scenes… deployed more than 200 times since December 2018

Since December 2018, Tank has gone out to over 200 scenes involving explosives and missing persons, playing an active role in the field.

[Slug] Calm temperament, strong scent and stamina, multiple awards earned at tactical evaluation competitions

Tank is known for his calm temperament, excellent scenting ability, and strong stamina.

In tactical evaluation competitions, he consistently ranked among the top in the explosives detection category.

[Slug] Now 8 years old, nearly 60 in human years… concludes seven years as a police dog

Tank is now eight years old, close to 60 in human years. After seven years as a police dog, he has officially retired.

For his handler, who worked side-by-side with him, the moment is deeply emotional.

He was the first detection dog I was assigned when I came here, so I think of him as my colleague and partner. It makes me quite emotional. I hope that from now on, Tank won’t be pricked by thorns or scratched by vines, won’t have to train harshly in the mountains, and instead can enjoy the rest of his life walking comfortably across wide open fields.

제가 와서 처음 받은 탐지견이기 때문에 저의 동료이자 파트너라고 생각하고 있습니다. 그래서 좀 많이 울컥합니다. 전 탱크가 이제는 가시에도 찔리지 않고 넝쿨에도 긁히지 않고 산속에서 아주 험하게 훈련하지 않고. 넓은 들판에서 편안하게 산책하면서 그렇게 여생을 마무리했으면 좋겠습니다.

Tank, having completed his police duties, is beginning a new chapter with a new family.

60살에 가까운 나이가 되면서
7년 간의 경찰견 생활을 마무리했습니다.

오랜 기간 동고동락하며
현장을 누볐던 핸들러도 만감이 교차합니다.
