The Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation, together with the Okinawa Government, is hosting an international exchange exhibition.
By connecting the memories of Jeju April 3rd Incident and the Battle of Okinawa, the exhibition offers a space to reflect on historical tragedies and to reaffirm the value of peace.

This mobilization effort was intended to rally support for Japanese soldiers as the nation prepared for war, preceding the intense fighting of the Battle of Okinawa.

These are photographs capturing the periods before and after the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, which claimed more than 200,000 lives.

The Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation and the Okinawa Prefectural Government are currently co-hosting an international exchange exhibition.

[Slug] Pre- and post-war Okinawa photos and newspapers… video testimonies screened

The exhibition presents photographs and newspaper articles illustrating different facets of Okinawa both pre- and post-war. Additionally, video testimonies are included to preserve the memories of those who lived through the conflict.

The exhibition commemorates a tragic history, one marked by the sacrifice of countless civilians, but it ultimately focuses on the process of peace and community recovery. This is achieved through compelling records and personal testimonies.

This Okinawa exhibition is being held because the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation and the Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum concluded an agreement in 2012 to form the East Asia Democracy, Peace, and Human Rights Network.

The exhibition sought to connect the Jeju April 3rd Incident with the Battle of Okinawa. By doing so, it aimed to reflect upon the enduring trauma and reaffirm the essential value of peace.

On the 26th of next month, materials conveying the history and stories of the Jeju April 3rd Incident will be shown in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.

War is not something like what we see in computer games or movies. When you look closely at the reality, it strips away human dignity. We must protect peaceful countries and regions, and create places where human rights?based on mutual respect?are truly alive. This shared understanding between us and Okinawa is what led to this exchange exhibition.

전쟁이라는 건 우리가 컴퓨터 게임이나 영화에서 보는 것처럼 그런 것이 아닙니다. 실상을 들여다보면 인간의 존엄을 빼앗아 가는 것이거든요. 평화로운 나라와 지역을 지켜야 되고, 사람과 사람이 서로 존중하는 인권이 살아 숨 쉬는 곳으로 만들어야 된다는 게 저희와 오키나와가 의견이 일치하는 부분이 있어서 교류전을 하게 됐습니다.

여러 기록과 증언을 통해 전쟁의 기억을 복원하고
평화와 공동체 회복을 위해 노력해 온 과정이 담겨있습니다.
