A tourist on Gapado Island who ran out of medication for a chronic condition received emergency medicine by drone after strong winds halted all ferry and helicopter services.

After receiving a 119 emergency call, Jeju Province and the Jeju Fire and Disaster Headquarters found it difficult to deploy helicopters or vessels. They secured the medication from a medical facility and dispatched it by drone.

Despite winds of 8 to 9 meters per second, the drone reached Gapado in about 10 minutes and delivered the medicine to local volunteer firefighters. The patient was able to get through the emergency.

Jeju Province said the case demonstrated that drones can serve as a rapid alternative for transporting critical supplies during disasters and medical emergencies.
