With summer vacation now underway, many working parents are facing the challenge of finding daytime care for their children. To help bridge that gap, Jeju City has introduced a new "Gap Childcare" program during the school break.

It’s morning at a community child center in downtown Jeju City, and a group of children are already focused on a game of baduk.
With school out for the summer, these kids are spending their vacation here, enjoying a variety of hands-on activities.

학교는 오히려 거의 공부만 하는데 여기는 할리갈리랑 레고가 재밌어요.
The center is seeing a summer surge, with many children now staying from morning until late afternoon.
[Slug] Limited budget offered only snacks and one meal
Until now, limited funding meant these centers could only afford to offer one meal and light snacks each day.

But this year, meaningful changes are underway. Jeju City, in partnership with local centers, has officially launched the new "Gap Childcare" program.
[Slug] Two full meals replace snacks
Simple snacks have been replaced by nutritious food, ensuring children receive two full, healthy meals every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
[Slug] Open to all elementary students during vacation
Most importantly, the program is open to all elementary students during the break, even those who have never visited the center before.
The service is completely free, providing significant financial relief to parents.

Every vacation, we receive one or two calls a day from parents asking whether their children can attend just during the break. We always had to turn them down because we didn't have the capacity. Now, I believe more children in the community?especially those who may not have lunch provided at home?will be able to come and use our center.

방학만 되면 부모님들이 우리 아이를 방학 기간에만 이용하면 안 되나요? 이런 전화를 하루에 한두 통은 받았어요. 근데 다 거절을 했습니다. 그런 여건이 안 되니까 이 지역에 있는 아이들 집에서 점심이 제공되지 않는 아이들은 계속적으로 이쪽으로 이제 이용이 되지 않을까.

City officials say the initiative will help close the childcare gap during the summer break, giving kids a safe, reliable place to stay, and making sure no child goes hungry.

여름방학 아이들 걱정 덜어줄 '틈새돌봄'

[방학 맞은 지역돌봄센터…오전부터 '활기']
오전부터 아이들이 삼삼오오 모여 바둑 교실 수업에 집중하고 있습니다.
아이들은 돌봄센터에서 다양한 활동을 즐기며 방학을 보내고 있습니다.

여름방학을 맞아 센터를 찾는 아이들이 늘면서
오전부터 늦은 오후까지 머무는 경우도 많습니다.
[기존 한정된 예산…간식·한 끼 제공 그쳐]
하지만 그동안은 한정된 예산 탓에 간식과 한 끼 정도만 제공할 수 있었던 것이 현실이었습니다.

올해부터는 제주시와 지역아동센터가 함께 틈새돌봄사업을 시작하면서 상황이 달라졌습니다.
[간식 대신 '든든한 식사'…하루 두 끼 제공 가능]
간식 대신 든든한 한 끼를 제공할 수 있게 됐고,
오전과 오후 두 끼 식사 제공도 가능해졌습니다.
[초등학생 누구나 신청 가능…방학 기간 한정 이용]
무엇보다 이번 사업은 초등학생이라면 누구든, 평소 해당 시설을 이용하지 않았더라도 참여할 수 있습니다.
이용료도 무료라 학부모들의 부담을 크게 덜어줄 것으로 기대됩니다.
