The summer drought is beginning to take its toll on crops as agricultural water supplies run low. If the dry spell continues, officials warn that crop damage could become even more severe throughout August. Joseph Kim reports.

The leaves on the trees are wilting and drying out.

During the growing season, both leaves and fruit should develop together, but they are failing to grow properly.
That is because farmers have not been able to supply enough water at the right time.

We’ve gone about 29 days without a single drop of rain. Because of the water shortage, we’ve been watering the Cheonhyehyang orchard once every five days, but as you can see, the trees are now drying out due to the lack of water.

Because greenhouses are hotter and drier than outside, crops need to be watered thoroughly for three to four hours at a time.

But due to water restrictions, farmers cannot irrigate for even an hour.

[Slug] Soil moisture ‘low’ as groundwater levels continue to fall
Monitoring results show that soil moisture in the (애월) Aewol area has reached the “low” level, indicating a serious shortage, while some areas are experiencing disruptions in agricultural water supplies.
Groundwater levels at wells in the (애월) Aewol area have also continued to decline since July 17, when the rainy season ended.
The crop damage that farmers feared is now becoming a reality.
Citrus trees are showing signs of poor growth, with leaves drying up and fruit failing to develop properly.

Sudden heavy rainfall or sharp temperature fluctuations could also cause fruit cracking and premature fruit drop.

Local authorities say groundwater levels have not yet reached the official drought threshold.
However, they are closely monitoring changes in groundwater levels and say they may consider restricting water extraction or temporarily suspending supplies if levels fall below the designated threshold.

장마가 끝난 지난 17일부터 지속적으로 내려가고 있습니다.
우려했던 작물 피해도 현실로 나타나고 있습니다.
