More than 150 care support workers who provide services to elderly people living alone in Jeju may suddenly have to leave their jobs at the end of this year.
This comes as the retirement age rule is being more strictly enforced starting this year.
Although government guidelines allow exceptions to the rule, the provincial government maintains that the matter should be resolved through an agreement between workers and employers.

Every day, she visits seniors living alone, checking in on them and keeping them company.
But at the end of this year, she’ll be forced to leave the job she loves.
[Slug] Jeju care workers face retirement at 65
Under tighter guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, care workers who turn 65 must now step down from their agencies by the end of the year.

We understand that the overall trend in society is toward raising the retirement age, but this happened so suddenly... There are still many workers here who are over 70. Then all of a sudden, we were told that we have to retire at 65.

[Slug] 150 of Jeju's 600 care workers face retirement
Jeju currently employs over 600 care support workers.
But about 150 of them, or 25 percent, are slated for retirement this December.
If they all leave at once, roughly 2,000 seniors living alone in Jeju could suddenly lose their daily care.
[Slug] Union urges Jeju to act; province says parties should agree
The care workers' union is demanding the provincial government step in to extend the age limit, accusing officials of standing by passively.
But Jeju Province says it's an issue that should be worked out directly between the workers and their agencies.
[Slug] Island exception available, but agencies remain cautious
Because Jeju is an island, health ministry rules actually allow for an exception to extend the retirement age.
However, local welfare centers rely on central government funding, making them hesitant to use it.
[Slug] Union calls for official notice, plans large rally
The union is now demanding the province issue an official notice, giving welfare centers the green light to apply that exception.
If their demand isn't met, they plan to hold a large-scale rally on the 24th.

[제주 생활지원사 600여 명…150여 명 올해 정년퇴직 대상]
현재 제주에서 활동중인 생활지원사는 600여 명.
이 가운데 25%에 달하는 150여 명이
올해 말 한꺼번에 정년퇴직 대상이 됩니다.
당장 이들이 현장을 떠나면
제주지역 독거어르신 2천명에 대한
돌봄 공백이 생길 수 있다는 우려가 나오고 있습니다.

제주생활지원사노조에서는
제주도가 정년 연장에 직접 나설 것을 촉구하고 있지만
제주도는 미온적이란 주장입니다.

국비를 지원받는 복지관 입장에서는
예외 규정에 조심스러울 수밖에 없습니다.

복지관이 예외규정을 적용할 수 있도록
제주도에서 공식 문서를 보내줄 것을 촉구하고 있습니다.
