Bats on Mt. Halla have been found to remain active foraging for food even in the dead of winter, unlike mainland Korean bats that hibernate throughout the season.

The Jeju World Heritage Headquarters said an ecological survey of cave-dwelling bats on Mt. Halla confirmed intermittent winter foraging and seasonal habitat patterns among bats in Gurin (구린) Cave, Pyeong (평) Cave, and the Gwaneumsa (관음사) Valley area.

The analysis found that the bats' foraging activity was most frequent in December, with sporadic activity also observed on warmer nights in January and February.

The survey also found that the bats use caves and valleys depending on the season. Caves served as spaces for hibernation and breeding, while nearby valleys and forests were used as foraging grounds.

계절별 서식지 이용 특성을 확인했습니다.

분석 결과
12월에 박쥐들의 먹이 활동이 빈번했고
1~2월에도
기온이 높은 밤에 산발적인 활동이 분석됐습니다.

또 계절에 따라
동굴과 계곡을 다르게 쓰는 특성도 확인됐는데
동굴은 겨울잠을 자거나
새끼를 기르는 공간으로,
인근 계곡과 숲은 먹이터로 이용됐습니다.
