Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Rotten Fruit Dragging Down Prices
  • It’s the harvest season for mandarin oranges, but prices for this year’s fruit are relatively low, due to an unusually large amount of rotten fruit. As Joseph Kim now reports, analysts blame the situation on the wet weather we’ve been having. [slug] Garak-dong Agricultural Market, Seoul It’s early in the morning but this market is already teeming with farmers who have gathered from all over the nation to put their harvested mandarins up for auction. Commission merchants are busy looking inside the cardboard boxes to check the quality of the fruit. [slug] Spoiled fruit blamed on wet weather There seem to be a few rotten mandarins due to the frequent rains last month. At the end of the day, the average price auctioned for a 10-kilogram box of mandarin oranges was 10,700 won. The price has continued to hover around the 10,000 won mark after hitting a low of 9,700 won on November 26th. One of the main contributing factors to the drop in prices is said to be the relatively low quality of this year’s mandarins. [slug] Price drop also due to falling demand Other reasons include the rise in number of other fruits like strawberries… and an overall drop in demand for mandarins. Insiders say prices may even drop further unless the fruit quality improves. INTERVIEW Kim Jeong-bae / Auctioneer, Nonghyup Garak Agricultural Market Due to the frequent rains, the mandarins are not as sweet as usual. The quality is not that high, some of it has gone bad. If weather conditions improve and the quality of the fruit improves, then there’s a chance prices could go up. Otherwise, there’s no chance... [camera] Kim Seung-cheol In an effort to bring prices back up, representatives from the provincial government Nonghyup Jeju branch visited the agricultural auctioning market in Garak-dong, Seoul… to ask people for their understanding about the current situation. The recent ratification of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement is also adding to the slump Jeju mandarin farms are experiencing. [REPORTER] Joseph Kim So far 146,000 tons of Jeju mandarins have been distributed… which is 27 percent of the total harvested amount. Mandarin farmers are urgently calling for more effort to be made to bring the market prices back up for the rest of their produce. Joseph Kim KCTV

  • JDC Duty Free looking to discontinue cigarette sales
  • JDC Duty Free looking to discontinue cigarette sales \69b in cigarettes sales so far this year Duty-free stores at Jeju International Airport and Jeju Port may discontinue cigarette sales as early as the second half of next year. The Jeju Free International City Development Center, which operates the stores, is currently discussing the issue with the the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. In order to have as little effect on profits as possible, the JDC is looking to replace cigarettes with other items. The move comes on the back of an increasing number of hoarders who have reportedly been taking advantage of the lower-than-market prices of cigarettes at duty-free stores, especially after the government raised prices at the start of the year. Among all items, cigarettes account for the second most sales at the JDC’s duty-free shops, bringing in some 69 billion won this year alone. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance says no concrete decision has yet been made on whether to halt sales.
