Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Jeju Support Committee may be disbanded
  • Jeju Support Committee may be disbanded No action on Kim Woo-nam’s proposal to make it permanent Jeju may be losing the special committee in the Office for Government Policy Coordination that is tasked with helping to execute plans for the province. Provincial officials say lawmaker Kim Woo-nam submitted a proposal in March to make the Jeju Support Committee a permanent body, but that its prospects are dim. The motion has been sent to the National Assembly’s Security & Public Administration Committee for consideration, but it is said to be facing opposition from both committee members and the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs. The Ministry explained that it saw little reason for the Jeju Support Committee to continue, given Jeju’s “smooth transition” to semi-autonomy and the committee’s decreased workload as a result of institutional improvements. As it stands now, the committee will disband in June. With next year’s general elections soon to take center stage at the National Assembly, pundits say that in order for that not to happen, lawmakers will have to approve the proposal making it a permanent committee during the regular assembly session currently underway.

  • Arirang: RCEP Trade Pact: Obstacles Remain
  • Arirang is reporting that the tenth round of negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership kicked off on Monday in Busan. Although the trade pact is expected to gain momentum following the conclusion of the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership,.... many obstacles remain. For more on these potential stumbling blocks,... Shin Se-min reports. Having missed out on the window to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement as an initial member,… Korea is accelerating efforts to be part of another mega trade deal in the works,… the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP. [slug] Population of RCEP countries stands at 3.4 billion The RCEP has 16 parties involved, including Korea, China, Japan, Australia, and India, along with ten member nations from ASEAN,… aiming to create one of the world's biggest economic blocs with three-point-four billion people. And, if signed,… Korea's trade ministry predicts that the deal will lock in nearly 30 percent of the global trade volume,… or some ten-point-six billion U.S. dollars,… involving a combined population that's much greater than that of the TPP. [INTERVIEW] Park No-hyoung / Prof. of Law, Korea University (Korean) "Although it isn't fair to compare the two trade pacts, the TPP and RCEP, since they're different in characteristics,... it's clear that RCEP will open up a wider consumer and market base considering the number of countries it involves." [SLUG] Many RCEP nations have rapidly expanding economies That's why Korean companies are expected to see more visible benefits from the RCEP agreement, as many of the member nations also have faster growing economies than those in the TPP. But the road ahead still looks bumpy. In terms of progress made on the pact, it's unlikely the talks will be able to meet China's hopeful year-end deadline. [INTERVIEW] Park No-hyoung / Prof. of Law, Korea University (Korean) "The speed of the talks, however, will pick up pace,… because the U.S. and Japan-led TPP agreement has done enough to provoke China to add speed to the RCEP." [CG IN] Deal may not meet initial year-end deadline At the same time, reaching an agreement among economic giants like India, China, and Japan will be a considerable hurdle... adding more skepticism to a speedy conclusion of the deal. [REPORTER] Shin Se-min "The focus is now on how negotiations in Busan will unfold,… as the first meeting among RCEP member nations takes place, following the landmark agreement on the TPP. It's likely to add pressure to involved parties to sort out differences and make faster progress on the regional trade framework. Shin Se-min, Arirang News."

  • KCTV: Red Kiwis in Season
  • Red kiwis are different from the normal variety not only because of their color, they’re also noticeable sweeter. And as Joseph Kim now reports, now is the perfect time to try them - they’re in season. [slug] Hwabuk-dong, Jeju City Ripe kiwi fruit hang from the vines waiting to be picked. Ignoring fatigue, farmers are harvesting the kiwi they have been growing, with a sense of satisfaction. [slug] Red kiwis in season Red kiwi, named after the color of the flesh, are now in season. Being different from the more ubiquitous green kiwi, they are high in sugar and there is no fuzz on its skin. [camera] Hyeon Gwang-hoon The sweetness of red kiwifruit registers around 10 degrees brix, which is higher than green kiwis’ average of just 6 to 7 degrees. The sale price for the red kiwi is set at 4,300 won per kilogram, also more lucrative for the red kiwi farmer. [INTERVIEW] Kang Sung-jin / Kiwi grower We are pleased that they are becoming more popular, mainly due to their soft, sweet flesh and beautiful color. Also, since the harvest season for the red kiwi is earlier than other kinds of kiwi, the farmers can stagger their workforce and extend the harvest period. [INTERVIEW] Kim Hyun-hwan/ Jeju Agricultural Technology Center The earlier harvesting season of red kiwis makes the farmers’ work easier because the shipment and labor force can be spread out. [REPORTER] Joseph Kim Jeju produces approximately 50% of the red kiwi nationwide. The second most abundant fruit grown in Jeju, red kiwifruit are contributing to enhance farming incomes. Joseph Kim KCTV
