Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Jeju ‘Applejubes’ Heading to Market
  • Harvesting has begun for Jeju’s apple jujubes… or applejubes, as they are known here. The fruit is garnering attention as the next big thing in the agriculture market. Jujubes are easy to grow… all they need is a greenhouse. What’s more is that applejubes(애플쥬베) ripen earlier in the year than late-maturing mandarins, so the fruit is ideal as a supplementary crop. Suejin Choi reports. Every tree here has fruit hanging from it. They may look like apples… but they’re jujubes… apple jujubes in fact. Weighing 30 to 40 grams each… they grow to be about 5 to 6 centimeters in length. Apple jujube trees were first grown in Jeju about five years ago. At first they were grown outdoors but couldn’t withstand the strong winds and the jujubes would fall from the trees prematurely, so farmers turned to greenhouses. And through trial and error, Jeju’s first batch of apple jujubes was harvested last year. [INTERVIEW] Song Sang-cheol / Jeju ARES The harvest will likely last from September to October, when there’s not much from the mainland to compete with the fruit. That’s gives us an advantage. The fully mature apple jujube has a sweetness of 20 degrees Brix… which is much sweeter than the average mandarin orange. [INTERVIEW] Kang Jeong-moon / ‘Apple jujube’ grower Since harvest is earlier than mandarins, it’s easier to find and manage laborers. The price for a 1.6 kilogram box of apple jujubes has been set at about 30,000 won for retail at major supermarkets. The fruit will also be sold at department stores and delivered to luxury hotels. The apple jujubes of Jeju are distributed almost a month earlier than in other regions across the nation… between late September and late October. [reporter] Suejin Choi They are also cost-effective, as the fruit is grown in greenhouses that do not require electric heating. With all things considered, growing apple jujubes is becoming a popular supplementary option for farmers here in Jeju. Suejin Choi, KCTV.

  • KCTV: ‘Korea Black Friday’ Sales in Jeju
  • As part of attempts to revive the sluggish economy, the government is hosting a two-week sale event called “Korea Black Friday” from October first through the 14th. The nationwide event involves department stores, shopping centers and supermarkets. Joseph Kim has more on the discounts available to local shoppers. Korea Black Friday, the term borrowed from the United States’ post-holiday sales event, has increased consumer interest because it is the largest sale event being participated by supermarkets, shopping malls and traditional markets nationwide. [slug] Dongmun Fish Market handing out gift certificates The Dongmun Fish Market will offer gift certificates to customers who spend a certain amount of money during the Korea Black Friday period. [Interview] Hyun Chang-hoon / Dongmun Fish Market Merchants Association As part of the Korea Black Friday event, we’ll hand out gift certificates to customers between October 12 and 15. And after discussions with the Small Enterprise Development Agency, from October 5 to 11... The Dongmun Public Market will also hold an event giving away gift vouchers and free gifts. A supermarket in Jeju city is discounting up-to-50 percent off around 1000 different items including clothing, daily necessities and groceries. [INTERVIEW] Kim Byung-gook / Processed food manager, Emart We usually offer discounts or giveaways on special sales, but this time we are marking down prices on all products that are participating in the Korea Grand Sale. However, on the first day of Korea Black Friday, some showed disappointment after finding out that it is just like an ordinary sales event. [INTERVIEW] Kim Ri-ah / Hallim-eup, Jeju City I feel like something is missing when comparing it to Black Friday in the USA. But since it has just begun, I am hoping it will get better. [REPORTER] Joseph Kim Starting with high expectations, the Korea Black Friday Event is drawing attention on whether or not it will meet tourists’ and consumers’ satisfaction. Joseph Kim KCTV
