Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. There’s nothing quite like a long weekend to really set time on fire. Here we are again already, after the long Chuseok weekend, ready to take another look at what the theatres are serving up. This is another slow week, with two smaller films opening. It’s next week, however, that’ll we’ll finally get Matt Damon’s latest, The Martian, which is already opening up overseas. In the meantime though, we’ve got The Loft, starring a few popular actors, and typical Hollywood fare. The other, Noble, is an independent Irish film. I’ll leave you to guess which is the one to see... [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Noble (2015, Stephen Bradley) An Irish woman finds her destiny on the streets of Saigon. Vietnam. 1989. It’s 14 years after the end of the war when Irish woman Christina Noble flies into Ho Chi Minh City. She leaves behind an extraordinary life story, but the best is yet to come. With only a few dollars, a dream, and her own hard-won courage, she is about to change everything for hundreds of thousands of poor Vietnamese people. This is the incredible true story of a fearless Irish heroine driven by her daring vision to escape the slums of Ireland and risk everything on the streets of Vietnam. Noble lives up to its advertising, and is the movie to see if you want to see proof of the power and vision that lies within each one of us. Despite being somewhat uneven, it is passionate, smart, touching, and tragic. [Slug CG] The Loft (2015, Erik Van Looy) Five husbands share a secret loft they use for their affairs. Karl Urban and James Marsden star in this psychological thriller, a story of five guys who conspire to secretly share a penthouse loft in the city. It is here where they can indulge in their deepest fantasies. But the fantasy becomes a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved. Paranoia seizes them as everyone begins to suspect one another. Friendships are tested, loyalties are questioned, and marriages crumble as the group is consumed by fear, suspicion, and murder. Noble is everything this film is not: smart, heroic, uplifting. Here instead we have an erotic thriller populated with characters as sleazy as its storyline. Wait for this one to come out on video or stream it in the comfort of your home if you’re curious.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Daepo Columnar Joints)
  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at a geological formation in Daepo-dong, Seogwipo, known as the Jusangjeolli (주상절리) columnar joints. As we’ll see, the site is not only an island geosite and natural monument, it’s also a great place for a photo-op. Jeju’s volcanic origins are scientifically important and often times quite beautiful. On the south side of the island, there is a famous coastal geological formation that attracts experts and the general public alike. [Slug CG] Daepo-dong, Seogwipo The Daepo Columnar Joints are a fascinating group of black basalt hexagon-shaped pillars some 600 meters southwest of Daepo-dong, Seogwipo. These columnar joints, which are the best examples of such outcrops on the island, formed when viscous lava -- estimated to be 1,100 degrees Celsius -- emerged from an eruption point and immediately solidified. [Slug CG] 30 to 40 meters in height They extend for about 1 kilometer along the Seogwipo coast and range from 30 to 40 meters in height. [Slug CG] Natural Monument No. 433 Also known by their ancient name Jisatgae (지삿개), the columns were designated Natural Monument No. 433 in 2004. In 2010 it was named one of Jeju’s nine geosites in the Global Geoparks Network. In the past, this area was a place for local residents to collect their drinking water, which permeated through the rocks and collected on the surface of shallow tidal areas. It is therefore both a cultural and geological heritage site. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker Because the Daepo formation comes in contact with ocean, there is a certain amount of erosion visible. However, the crashing blue and white waves on these black geological marvels are perfect for photo ops. The location is also a popular spot for fishing. All in all, it’s one of Jeju’s many must-see attractions. Todd Thacker KCTV
