Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Officials seek help naming new Jeju travel website Submit your idea at www.hijeju.or.kr The provincial government and the Jeju Tourism Association are seeking the public’s help in deciding on a name for a new online shopping site dedicated to Jeju tour packages. The two organizations are looking for a name that best represents the island and what it has to offer. Anyone may submit an idea through the Hi Jeju web portal. The cutoff for submissions is October 11th. Once finished, shoppers on the site will be able to book in real time flights, accommodations, rental cars, and tickets for tourist attractions. The site is expected to be up and running around the end of the year. According to current law, odors up to a score of 15 are allowed on the scale used to measure them. That limit will be dropped to 10.   • Jeju, Hainan to ‘strengthen ties’ Governors sign wide-ranging agreement Monday Jeju and the Chinese province of Hainan have had a so-called “sisterhood relationship” for twenty years, and the leaders of both have agreed to further strengthen those ties. Jeju Governor Won Heeryong on Monday met his Hainan counterpart (류츠구이) Liu Xigui Monday at the provincial office. The two agreed that, based on the exchanges they have made during the past two decades, they would expand their cooperation in tourism, culture, education, sports and trade. To that end, the two regional governments will work together to draw up specific plans that will be carried between 2016 and 2020.   • First shipments of outdoor-grown mandarin oranges 459,000 tons for sale, 80,000 tons for processing The first shipments were made Monday of this year’s outdoor-grown mandarin orange crop, with very early-ripening fruit being the first to be sent to market. The provincial government estimates the size of this year’s harvest at 539,000 tons. 459,000 tons will be shipped to market for sale, while the remaining 80,000 will be used as ingredients in processed items. 85 percent of total shipments, or 363,000 tons, will be distributed on the mainland through wholesale or joint markets. 4,000 tons will be shipped overseas and another 2,000 tons will be given to the military. In order to keep prices competitive, the province plans to cap shipments at 5,000 tons daily during the peak season for the fruit, which is around the end of this year and the beginning of next. 노지감귤 첫 출하…45만 9천 톤 상품 유통 오늘부터 극조생 노지감귤 출하가 시작되는 가운데 상품으로 출하되는 물량이 46만 톤에 이를 것으로 전망됐습니다. 제주특별자치도에 따르면 올해 노지감귤 예상 생산량 53만 9천 톤 가운데 상품 출하물량은 45만 9천 톤, 가공용은 8만톤으로 예상되고 있습니다. 상품 출하물량의 85%인 36만 3천톤은 도매시장과 공판장 등 도외로 유통되며 4천 톤은 수출용으로 2천 톤은 군납용으로 처리될 예정입니다. 제주도는 감귤 가격 경쟁력 강화를 위해 연말 연시 성수기에는 하루 5천 톤 이내로 출하량을 조절할 계획입니다.

  • Local consumer prices fall 0.3% in September Had been climbing until last month Consumer prices in Jeju had been on the increase, but they fell slightly last month. According to the Jeju branch of the Honam Regional Statistics Office, Jeju’s consumer price index in September was 109.09. That’s 0.3 percent lower than in August. Prices for industrial products fell by 0.5 percent due to lower oil prices. In the service sector, prices were down 0.2 percent. Meanwhile, the consumer price index for living necessities was 107.31.
