Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Hydrogen Powered Tram Plan Reignited
  • The JDC, Jeju Free International City Development Center has declared to introduce the island’s first hydrogen powered trams. A corresponding project was proposed by the province in the past which collapsed due to economic reasons. Eyes are on how the JDC’s plan develops. Todd Thacker reports. Report A tram is a rail vehicle that runs on a tramway. Cities on the mainland are competitively building and introducing tramways. The Jeju Free International City Development Center has said that it will introduce the island’s first trams as a part of a new transport infrastructure building project. Officials believe that trams may ease traffic congestion and improve airport access by connecting the airport and major inner city stops. In 2011, the province’s feasibility study on trams concluded that the profitability of this mode of transportation is negligible due to its high operating costs, and so the tram project foundered. However, the JDC expects that the tram will be an economical, efficient and eco-friendly vehicle by using hydrogen power. Traffic and economic situations have also changed over the last 10 years. Though the plans to bring trams to the island are at an early stage, they are very open ones. Consultation with the national government and the province is needed to realize the plans, and administrative procedures for the consultation are not simple. Consensus building between citizens, and opposition from the taxi and bus industries, cannot be overlooked. Meanwhile, the introduction of trams has been suggested in several reports, including an interim report for the province’s International Free City Development plan and a tourism promotion plan. Now, all eyes are on how the JDC’s plan will take shape in the future. Todd Thacker, KCTV

  • Vaccination Process Going Smoothly
  • Jeju’s vaccination rollout is running smoothly. More than 50 percent of the people on the list to receive the first phase of vaccinations have been given their vaccine shots. Following the AstraZeneca vaccine, Pfizer's vaccine is expected to arrive on the island next Monday, March 15th. Joseph Kim reports. Report Healthcare personnel and inpatients of long-term care hospitals have been given their vaccine shots beginning February 26th in Jeju. About 1,680 people have been inoculated. That’s more than 52 percent of the people on the list of the first phase of the vaccination plan. The province expects that the first phase of the vaccination would be done by March 18th if it goes smoothly. 17 cases of side effects following vaccination have been reported, but they appear to be mild like headaches and fever. Vaccinations for first responders including healthcare workers are starting today. 4,800 doses of vaccines for their first round have been rolled out across the island. The first batch of Pfizer’s vaccine will be arriving next Monday at the earliest. As Pfizer’s vaccine should be stored in an ultra cold freezer at temperatures - 75 degrees Celsius, it is highly likely to be transported by air. The local quarantine authorities expect that vaccination for healthy citizens between 19 and 64 would be made beginning July. As the vaccination process is going smoothly, expectations on ending the pandemic are high. Joseph Kim, KCTV
