Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

Its natural habitat is in the mid-range of Hallasan Mountain ? around 500 to 900 meters above sea level. Over the years, the tree has been planted in strategic areas around Jeju and Seogwipo cities to beautify the urban landscape. And popular festivals are organized every year around the time the cherry blossoms are at their fullest. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family, including street performances, music, food, and a flea market. [Slug CG] DNA tests in 2007 reveal separate species Until just a decade or so ago there was some confusion about whether the Jeju Cherry was a member of the Yoshino cherry species. That all changed in 2007 when scientists used DNA testing to determine the Jeju Cherry is indeed a separate species that originated on Jeju. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker Thanks to its recognition as a unique species, the Jeju Cherry’s habitat and genetic lineage are now subject to systematic conservation. This is great news, as it will ensure this colorful and fragrant ritual of spring can continue to be enjoyed and cherished. Biyangdo discovered to have been formed between 27k-43k years ago Initial belief of 1,000 year ago come from historical records Biyangdo, known as the island of a thousand years, was discovered to have been formed more than 40,000 years ago. Dr. Jeon Yong-mun (전용문) of the World Natural Heritage Center of Jeju stated that a new analysis of the current data showed that Biyangdo is between 27,000 years to 43,000 years old. The analysis also showed that the island was formed as a result of volcanic activity on land, and not by the eruption of the volcano underwater. The longtime belief that Biyangdo was formed 1,000 years ago by volcanic activity under the sea came from references in the historical records of “Goryeosa (고려사)” and “Goryeosa Jeolyo (고려사절요).”
