Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • THAAD Effect: A Game Changer
  • The number of Chinese tourists has plummeted by 90 percent this year in the wake of South Korea’s deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system, which China opposes. As Mike Laidman now reports, though, it’s not only bad news. Report ### c.g in ### About 625,000 Chinese tourists visited the island from January through August this year. • Council defers decision on expansion of capital verification
  • Council defers decision on expansion of capital verification But lawmakers say they agree in principle with proposal Local lawmakers have opted not to pass an amendment that would have expanded the scope of developments that must undergo a capital verification process. The provincial council’s tourism committee said that it agreed on the need to expand the scope, but that the plan as submitted lacked a mechanism by which the council could make its voice heard on the results of the verification process. Lawmakers say that’s why they delayed a decision on the matter. As it's written, the amendment stipulates that verification is needed both when the developer of a project is selected and when the project itself is approved. • Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] The weather is growing darker. As the sun loses some of its lustre, the hot days melt away to cooler nights, and the days become shorter, so too do the movies change. This week, Beguiled will charm you with its 19th-century style and warm tones, helping you move comfortably into autumn. Conversely, the remake of Stephen King’s It will drag you, kicking and screaming, into the wet and cold dark, whether you’d like it to or not. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] It (2017, Andy Muschietti) A group of bullied kids band together to stop a monster. I personally remember, quite vividly, actually, watching the 1990 version of It when I was in elementary school, and then subsequently being too scared to go the bathroom by myself. This 2017 update is hoping to instill the same fear in a whole new generation. Based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, It has been terrifying readers for decades. When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries. But It isn’t just about the scares. In fact, what it does even better than scare you out of your seat is look at the relationships between the young protagonists, their parents, their bullies, and their lives. It is scary, but it’s heartbreaking, too, in a way that lingers with you after you’ve left the theatre. [Slug CG] Beguiled (2017, Sofia Coppola) A wounded Union soldier arrives at a girls' school in Virginia. From writer/director Sofia Coppola comes a story of the American Civil War. During the Civil War, at a Southern girls' boarding school, the sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events. The actors all play their parts perfectly, working of one another’s charms, darknesses, wits, and innocences. This isn’t what you might think it would be, for The Beguiled doesn’t turn away from what we would consider taboo at a girls’ school in the 19th-century. There’s plenty of lust, blood, and betrayal on display here, and even more than a period piece, you should expect a thriller, one highlighted by strong performances and all the tension you could ever ask for.

  • 2 farmers arrested for illegal dumping of livestock wastewater
  • 2 farmers arrested for illegal dumping of livestock wastewater 8,500 tons allegedly dumped over last 5 years Police arrested two farmers for allegedly illegally dumping livestock wastewater in Sangmyeong-ri, Hallim-eup. Jeju District Court Chief judge Kang Jae-won issued arrest warrants for the 57-year-old man surnamed Jin and the 42-year-old man surnamed Ko. They represent two farms. The court maintained arrests were warranted to allow for proper investigations because the two are partially denying the crimes. Investigators allege they illegally disposed of some 8,500 tons of livestock wastewater over the last five years. They reportedly dumped it in an ecologically sensitive area where it ended up contaminating groundwater supplies. Jeju Municipal Police are investigating three other area farms. Investigators say they will seek arrest warrants in those cases, as well, should they be justified.
