Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Film Focus
  • Film Focus [Anchor] It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] It’s been six years since we had last had a Michael Moore documentary, but he’s back. Check out what he has to say about the state of America in Where to Invade Next. Next weekend, though, it’s back to more traditional, though no-less divisive fare. The remake of Ben-Hur, storms...no, saunters, into theatres. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Where to Invade Next (2016, Michael Moore) Michael Moore sees what the USA can learn from other nations. Those wanting something a little more thought-inducing than the traditional weekend movie should find something to talk about in Where to Invade Next, a subversive documentary/comedy in which Michael Moore plays the role of "invader," and visits a host of nations to learn how the U.S. could improve its own prospects. Many will already be familiar with Moore’s political views and filmmaking style, and a quick look at the trailer will let you know whether or not this is the movie for you. Moore approaches progressive politics with renewed and unabashed vigor, although it is mostly one-sided. What he finds during his travels is that the solutions to some of America's most serious problems already exist in the world - they're just waiting to be adopted. Whatever your political views, Where to Invade Next will spark conversation and open your eyes just a little bit further. But in the end, it’s up to you to interpret what you see. [Slug CG] Ben-Hur (2016, Timur Bekmambetov) Judah Ben-Hur returns to his homeland to seek revenge. Ben-Hur has the potential to be just as polarising as Moore’s political documentary, thanks in no small part to its very existence; the need for a remake to the 1959 classic was an idea very few ever had on their minds. Judah Ben-Hur was a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala, an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves, Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but an encounter with Jesus leads him to the Crucifixion, where he discovers forgiveness and finds redemption. As with any number of big-budget remakes, Ben-Hur can’t piece together enough of its predecessor’s successes to stand on its own. It’s too empty, too shallow, and relies too much on fast editing and sloppy GGI. The movie has mostly been written off as disposable by many, something you should carefully consider before opening your wallet.

  • Chuseok full moon unlikely to be visible
  • Chuseok full moon unlikely to be visible Rain forecast Wednesday, Thursday People traditionally make wishes when gazing at the harvest moon on Chuseok, but it’s looking like the weather won’t cooperate this year. The Jeju weather bureau is forecasting rain on Wednesday and Thursday, which is Chuseok. They expect skies to remain mostly cloudy but the mercury to drop on Friday, due to the influence of a cold front moving in from the north. A tropical low pressure front, however, could change the weather conditions beginning on the 12th, so experts are advising everyone to stay on top of current projections throughout the next few days.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Folklore & Natural History Museum)
  • [Anchor] This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at an excellent educational resource. The Folklore and Natural History Museum here in Jeju City has, since 1984, offered the public a unique snapshot of island culture. [Report] The culture, folklore and history of the Tamna Kingdom ? known since the 1400s as Jeju Island ? is as rich as it is diverse. But it’s important to keep in mind that Jeju’s cultural assets grew organically out of island’s geographical and marine features. [Slug CG] Ildo 2-dong, Jeju City And so this is why the Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum, in the Ildo 2-dong area of Jeju City, is such an important resource. It serves to provide the public with a clearer understanding of the differences in the cultural development here versus the mainland. [Slug CG] museum.jeju.go.kr Opened in 1984, it is one of the island’s older museums, and among its functions is collecting, researching, and exhibiting Jeju historical materials. When visitors walk through its exhibition halls, they are exposed to information and dioramas depicting the island’s marine life, soil and rocks, and flora and fauna. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker When it comes to Jeju folklore, two large halls hold thousands of items which show changes in the ancient island lifestyles of the Jeju people. These include housing, clothing and food, displays of shamanism and sacrificial ceremonies related to the haenyeo -- Jeju diving women -- and its fishermen. [Slug CG] Open daily 8:30 AM to 6 PM, closed on Chuseok Although the museum will be closed Sept. 15 and 16 over the Chuseok holiday, the rest of this month it is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. As it is a provincial museum, tickets are very reasonable and the museum itself is worth multiple visits.
