4. Maritime Institute excavates waters of Shinchang-ri
Search to determine Jeju’s role in medieval maritime trade

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage has begun excavating the waters of Shinchang-ri, Hangyeong-myeon in search of underwater artifacts.

The research team will take underwater pictures using 3D technology to record the relics.

An item made of gold was discovered by a haenyeo, a Jeju woman diver, in the waters of Shinchang-ri in 1983 marks the area’s first discovery of underwater artifacts. The province and the Jeju National University Museum also confirmed the discovery of a celadon, a jade-green porcelain, from the Southern Song Dynasty in China in its research in 1997.

The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to categorize local artifacts and determine Jeju’s pivotal role in medieval maritime trade.

한경면 신창리 해역에서
수중 유물 발굴조사에 착수했습니다.

이번 조사는
수중사진을 이용한
3차원 입체사진 실측 기술을 도입해 수중유적을 기록하게 됩니다.

신창리 유적은
1983년 한 해녀가 금제유물을 신고하면서처음 알려졌으며
제주도와
제주대박물관이 1997년 조사에서
중국 남송시대 청자를 확인한 바 있습니다.

문화재청은 유적의 성격을 규명하고
제주도가
중세 해상교역로에서 차지하는 위상을 밝혀낸다는 구상입니다.
