Maritime drug smuggling is on the rise across Korea. To counter the growing threat of drugs being hidden on ships, the Jeju Coast Guard is ramping up detection efforts?introducing underwater drones for the first time.

[Slug] Foreign crew arrested on suspicion of drug use

This past January, the Coast Guard arrested an Indonesian crew member on suspicion of using methamphetamine.
The number of offenders arrested last year was 16, more than five times higher than two years ago.

[Slug] Growing concerns over maritime drug distribution and smuggling

As the number of drug offenders increases, concerns over drug distribution and smuggling are also growing.
Recently, there have been multiple attempts to smuggle drugs through airports, and risks of maritime smuggling ? which are more difficult to monitor and crack down on ? are also increasing.

[Slug] Drugs Hidden in Ships: Smuggling Arrests Surge Nationwide
In particular, there has been a series of arrests across the country for maritime smuggling offenders who concealed drugs on ships or container vessels and brought them into the country.




The amount of drugs smuggled via maritime routes nationwide increased more than sixfold from 100 kg in 2019 to 612 kg last year.

[Slug] Drugs Hidden Under Hulls: Underwater Drones Deployed
In response, the Coast Guard has decided to expand its ship drug detection equipment.
To prevent crimes in which drugs are hidden under ships or in engine rooms, underwater drones capable of filming will be introduced for the first time this year.

Starting in the second half of the year, the Jeju Coast Guard plans to deploy new equipment, such as underwater drones, in actual operations and strengthen crackdowns, particularly on foreign crew members who are considered high-risk for drug-related crimes.

해상 마약 밀수 차단…수중드론 첫 도입


[외국인 선원 마약 투약 혐의 구속…검거 사범 급증]
지난 1월, 해경이
인도네시아 국적 선원을 필로폰 투약 혐의로 구속했습니다.

지난해 검거 사범은 16명으로
2년 전보다 5배 이상 급증했습니다.

[투약 사범 증가세…마약 해상 유통·밀수 '우려']
투약 사범이 늘면서
마약 유통과 밀수 우려도 높아지고 있습니다.

최근 공항을 통한 마약 밀수 시도가 연달아 있었고,

단속이나 감시가
더 어려운 해상 밀반입 위험도 커지는 상황입니다.

[선박·컨테이너선에 마약 숨겨 반입…밀수사범 전국 검거]
특히 선박이나 컨테이너선에
마약을 숨겨 국내로 들여오는
해상 밀수 사범이 전국에서 잇따라 검거됐습니다.



전국적으로 해양을 통해 들여온 마약은
지난 2019년 100kg에서
지난해 612kg으로 6배 이상 급증했습니다.

이에 따라 해경이 선박 마약 탐지 장비를 확충하기로 했습니다.
