Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Turning to Arirang now, and a look at how those in the fashion industry are finding new ways to build on the unique qualities of Korean fashion. Here's Hwang Ji-hye. Report [slug] Street fashion driving boom in Korea's fashion industry This district in southern Seoul bustling with young Koreans is now one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. A major reason for that... is the street fashion shops lining the sidewalks of Garosu-gil. [Interview] Seira Terada / Japanese tourist "Korean clothes are cheaper than Japan and more fashionable." [Interview] Somlak Kosakarn / Thai tourist "It(The shops) provide us with a reasonable price. With that reason, I think it's good for us to go shopping around (here)." [REPORTER] Hwang Ji-hye "And this so-called street fashion of Korea... that incorporates Seoul's overall pop culture driven by Korean celebrities and entertainment content is what many point to as the hotbed of Korean fashion." Jung Ku-ho, director of the ongoing Seoul Fashion Week, says... Korean fashion has carved out a niche for itself. [Interview] Jung Ku-ho / Executive director, Seoul Fashion Week (Korean) "Foreign fashion weeks focus on high-end brands, but Korea's fashion week features clothes with more street and pop culture elements. And that's what foreign buyers and the press are interested in, too." [SLUG] Camera: Lee Soo-bok, Kim Woo-sung, Bang Bo-hyun The rising brand value of the capital city of Seoul... is also drawing major fashion houses, which have begun to recognize its rise in the world of Asian fashion. Chanel brought its cruise fashion show to Seoul for the first time last year... and French lifestyle brand Maison Kitsune paid tribute to Korea in its 2015 fall/winter collection. Jung also says... fashion is part of the culture boom driving the larger Korean Wave. [Interview] Jung Ku-ho / Executive director, Seoul Fashion Week (Korean) "What clothes Seoulites wear and what they eat and the culture of the city in general seem to be garnering interest from around the world these days." Jung, who's a successful designer himself, adds that,... to survive in the already saturated industry,... local designers need to take advantage of Korea's Internet infrastructure. [Interview] Jung Ku-ho / Executive director, Seoul Fashion Week (Korean) "Focusing only on the local market is no longer working. Designers should think of the global market as a city and find ways to promote their brands and communicate with their customers. These days, they can do it using social media." He adds... this is also a way for them to cut costs in the current economic downturn. Hwang Ji-hye, Arirang News.

  • Arirang: Hera Seoul Fashion Week
  • Turning to Arirang now, Seoul Fashion Week has pulled back the curtain and set up the catwalk for its 2016 Fall-Winter show. But behind all the glitz and glamour, the local fashion industry has lost some of its luster in recent years. Kim Min-ji has the details. [slug] Hera Seoul Fashion Week Through March 26, Dongdaemun Design Plaza Korean designers will be presenting their latest collections at the Hera Seoul Fashion Week as they look to make a splash and win over global buyers. [REPORTER] Kim Min-ji And this year, up and coming designers also have the chance to present their work, thanks to relaxed rules that open doors to more participants. [slug] Move aimed at increasing participation among new designers Previously, designers were required to own a private brand for at least five years,... but now the criteria has been lowered to just one year -- as the local industry aims to expand the arena for hard working designers who are looking to get off the ground. Designer Kim Su-jinn, whose professional career has lasted for almost a decade now,... says perseverance is key. [Interview] Kim Su-jinn / Designer, SoulPot Studio (Korean) "Despite starting with very little money, I would work during the day and make clothes overnight. For me, it was about keeping my pace. I didn't compare myself with other designers. I felt it was important to find the way that was right for me and take steps accordingly." [SLUG] More Korean designers taking part in intl. fashion shows More and more Korean designers have made inroads into overseas markets as well as taking part in internationally renowned fashion weeks. Designer Lee Ji-youn, who was recently in New York, says Korean designers are getting more recognition and it's important that they are willing to accept change. [Interview ] Lee Ji-youn / Designer, Jarrett (Korean) "Fashion trends now circulate worldwide, so it's important not to pursue Korean traditional styles. Of course, we need to have our own style, but we also need to accept diversity." [SLUG] Local fashion market in slump But behind the perfect looks and dazzle of these designers,... the local fashion industry has been in the shade,... facing slowdown in the local economy and growing competition from overseas brands. In recent years,... more than two dozen fashion labels have gone out of business or filed for bankruptcy. Big names have been no exception. The country's leading fashion companies saw their operating profit fall significantly in 2015 from a year ago. [Interview] Rupert Lee / Korea Fashion Association (Korean) "Fashion companies in Korea tend to lack communication with consumers. Fashion trends no longer go from one country to another. Companies need to get out there and set new trends as well as keep up with trends that consumers are pursuing." [CAMERA] Lim Hyun-jung Experts say that although prospects for the the local fashion industry aren't so rosy, aggressive marketing and more research into consumer and street trends could help Korea's designers get far... especially if they are able to hitch a ride on the popularity of Hallyu, or the Korean wave.
