Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Radish Farmers Left With Nothing
  • This winter’s record-breaking snow and relentless cold devastated radish farms. Most of the crop is rotten, meaning growers won’t even attempt to ship it to market. Mike Laidman reports. [slug] Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo Tractors ruthlessly plough up the radish fields where farmers had previously spent months taking care of the crop. The radishes are crushed under the tractor tires. These winter radishes have all rotted because of last month's record-breaking snow and cold. Farmers have to give up on shipping them to market. Interview Lee Seung-taek / Radish farmer A farmer’s crops are like his children. We take great care to grow them and now that I can't do anything but discard them, I feel terrible. <인터뷰 : 이승택/월동무 재배농가> "농사꾼에게 작물이 자식과 같은데 밭을 갈아엎는다는 것은 말이 안 되죠. 오죽 답답하면 이러겠습니까." Cut in half, this radish shows a yellowish ring. That’s the sign of rot after a frozen radish thaws. But the rotten radish skins remain the same, so it’s not easy to differentiate the saleable crops from the rotten ones. And some rotten radishes have been returned after being shipped. [slug] Daejeong Farmers Association seeks compensation 80 percent of winter radishes in (대정) Daejeong were damaged by the cold weather. Farmers are asking for compensation for the losses they suffered from having to dispose their crops. They also argue that the compensation should be based on actual farming instead of farmer registration lists. Interview Mun Seong-gwon / Representative, Daejeong Farmers Association Compensation for losses don’t go to farm lessees. I hope some grants are available to cover lease costs and seed expenses. <인터뷰 : 문성권/대정읍농민회장> "(월동무) 폐기에 대한 직불금 지원과 임대한 밭은 지원되는 게 없어서 임대비와 종자값만이라도 지원됐으면 좋겠습니다." The island has asked the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs to extend the damage report period for compensation because much of the damage in Jeju was confirmed late. The ministry says it has yet to review the request. [camera] Hyeon Gwang-hoon [REPORTER] Mike Laidman As time wears on, damages mount, and frustration grows, and more and more radishes are simply being thrown away. Mike Laidman KCTV

Interview Joo Jae-seong / Dot (Korean) "We worked with a lot of visually impaired people to maximize their sense of touch using Braille. • KCTV: Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. Heading into the weekend, there are no new big releases for Korea. But we were off the air last week, and there are two big releases to catch up on. So let’s turn back the clock a week and take a look at what we missed. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Deadpool (2016, Tim Miller) A mercenary undergoes an experiment that gives him powers. Deadpool is the comic book adaptation a lot of fans have been waiting a long time for. Buoyed by the success of some other recent R-rated superhero flicks, Deadpool is sure making its mark on the industry. Set in the X-Men universe, Deadpool is a lot of loud, angry, dirty fun. Wade Wilson is subject to an experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers. Armed with his skills as an ex-Special Forces operative, a twisted sense of humour, and the alter ego Deadpool, he sets off to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life. This is definitely not family-friendly fare. It’s loud, vulgar, crude, and selfish. And star Ryan Reynolds fits into the crass, wise-cracking role perfectly; an ideal outlet for his smirking personality. Make sure not to miss this one. [Slug CG] Zootopia (2016, Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush) A con artist fox and a bunny cop must work together. Zootopia is the polar-opposite of Deadpool, a family-friendly movie for everyone, from young children to grownups. Judy Hopps is the very first bunny on the Zootopia police force, and eager to prove herself, she jumps at the chance to crack her first case, even if it means joining up with fast-talking, scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to solve the mystery. While it might have seemed that animated animal movies were running out of things to say, Zootopia is a breath of fresh air that is smart, amusing, and with plenty of crisp, colourful animation. It features themes of prejudice and diversity, and delivers a solid message to audiences about tolerance and acceptance. But it’s not only a solid message that this movie delivers; Zootopia, from Disney Animation Studios, is now at the level of Pixar with this release, challenging what was once the undisputed king of computer animation. In fact, it’s being called one of the best animated Disney films ever, high praise indeed if you take a look back at their impressive animated resume. Two films then, released last week, which are both very worth your time and your money.

  • Mass cultivation of Jeju gulfweed ‘a success’
  • Mass cultivation of Jeju gulfweed ‘a success’ Jeju Marine Fisheries Institute says 1,500 kg produced at 2 farms Researchers have succeeded in mass cultivating Jeju gulfweed, the main ingredient in a local dish called (몸국) mom-guk. The Jeju Marine Fisheries Institute says its aquaculture farms in Jongdal (종달) and Jocheon (조천) produced 1,000 kilograms and 500 kilograms, respectively… almost a year after cultivation began in March 2015. The manually-cultivated gulfweed is said to be two to three times larger than naturally-grown gulfweed, which can be found in Jeju waters… and is easier to prepare dishes with, as it requires less rinsing. The larger gulfweed also reportedly tastes just as good as the natural type. The research institute says it now plans to expand this project to include other fishing villages across the island.
