Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Mandarin orange farmers are suffering these days due to price drops and shipment delays. As other varieties, like the Hallabong and redhyang, are being prepared for the market, people are growing more concerned that these crossbred citrus may negatively affect the whole fruit industry. Joseph Kim explains. [slug] Outdoor-grown mandarin prices remain low Kim Ik-joong, a farmer who grows Hallabong, is waiting for harvest. But he is not happy that the low prices of mandarin oranges and what impact it might have on the Hallabong market. Moreover, delayed shipments of mandarin oranges have created a backlog, forcing Hallabong shipments to be delayed as well. Even worse, it is hard to expect reasonable prices for mandarin oranges, because underripe citrus hybrids are being shipped for the Lunar New Year’s Day. Interview Kim Ik-joong / Hallabong farmer When we are ready to sell mandarin oranges and Hallabong at the same time, it creates competition.   • Cable TV, major networks agree to resume VOD service Service halted January 1 amid dispute After much dispute, cable companies and the country’s major broadcasters have agreed to again provide current on-demand programming from the networks on cable tv. Representatives from the Korean Cable Television Association and terrestrial television channels said they resumed the video-on-demand service Friday. It had been halted at the start of the month. KCTV viewers can now watch all the latest shows from the major broadcasters at their leisure through KCTV’s VOD service. The agreement also means cable tv networks will not pull MBC commercials off the air. That had been discussed when the two sides clashed over the VOD issue.   • Last summer, storage lockers were installed at three bus stations in Seogwipo. Six months later, officials say many of the lockers have been locked for months… and with no master key to unlock them, there is little they can do about the situation. Mike Laidman reports. [slug] Bus station lockers in Seogwipo These free storage lockers were installed last year at this bus station near Joongang Rotary in Seogwipo. The idea was to use intercity buses as an alternative means of delivering items between Jeju City and Seogwipo; people could drop off items at the bus stops and the bus drivers would then place them inside lockers for the recipient to pick up in Seogwipo. [slug] Lockers at three locations in Seogwipo opened in July Storage lockers like the ones here were installed at three bus stations in Seogwipo City last July. Now, six months later, city officials are conducting a checkup of the facilities. [slug] Passwords set - all 12 lockers remain locked Items can be stored by pressing the touchpad on the locker and a display shows how many days have passed since it was locked. All twelve lockers here have been locked for days. Some, for as little as two days, others, for over two months. None of the lockers could be opened at the time they were inspected. There was even one that was out of order, despite it still being locked. Residents say it’s an inconvenience as now none of the lockers can be used. We can’t take responsibility for that.   • Online tax filing service goes live National Tax Service says filing will be ‘simplified’ this year Authorities say they’ve made it easier this year to file their tax returns online. The National Tax Service launched a new online service Friday, which allows users to claim 13 types of tax deductions, including insurance fees, medical costs, and education expenses. Paper receipts, however, will still be required for categories not listed online, such as donations and the costs incurred to buy glasses or school uniforms. The criteria for deductions has also been expanded to include the support of dependents who earn five million won or less per year, rather than the previous 3.3 million won.   • Lunar New Year ancestral rites to cost 5% more this year Estimated \232,000 at traditional markets Food preparation for the upcoming Lunar New Year’s ancestral memorial rites will cost about 5 percent more this year than it did a year ago. Based on its latest survey of food prices nationwide, the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation says a typical table will cost an average 232,000 won at traditional markets, 4.9 percent more than in 2015. Shoppers who head to regular grocery markets instead will be paying about 329,000 won, which is 5.3 percent more than last year.   • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. 2016 is speeding along, and as we enter our third weekend of the new year, we are presented with two very different movies for very different crowds. The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is for adults, but even then, not all will be drawn to its realism and brutality. At the complete other end of the spectrum is the Goosebumps movie, featuring Jack Black. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Goosebumps (2015, Rob Letterman) While Goosebumps it doesn't hold the same kind of widespread appeal that say, a Pixar movie might have, it does bring with it a certain amount of nostalgia. It is, after all, based upon the wildly successful children’s series of the same name. Teenager Zach Cooper moves to a small town and meets the beautiful girl living right next door. But he soon learns that her dad is actually be R. L. Stine, the author of the Goosebumps series. The monsters that Stine has created are real, and he protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. But when Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to all of them to get all the creatures back in the books where they belong. While it would be all too easy to write this off as another campy, B-level kids’ movie, Goosebumps actually holds its own pretty well. There are a few decent thrills to be had, the action scenes are unique, and the dialogue can actually be quite witty, things you wouldn’t expect just from looking at the trailers. [Slug CG] The Revenant (2015, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu) The Revenant is inspired by true events, and is an immersive experience capturing one man's epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant, John Fitzgerald. Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. The movie has already picked up a handful of awards, and rightly so. It’s cinematography and acting are among the best, and is definitely something which should be seen on the big screen.
