Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Jeju Batdam Festival Draws to Close
  • The first-ever Jeju Batdam Festival was held over the weekend. Organizers and participants say it shed light on the island’s unique stone walls, and their importance to local culture. Mike Balfour has more. The first ever Jeju Batdam Festival has ended after four days of events. In its first ever launch, diverse and interesting activities were prepared including a rock stacking contest and a stone rolling contest. Many other activities were also held to help promote Jeju’s volcanic stone walls known as “batdam”. [INTERVIEW] Choi Sang-sul / Gujwa-eup I participated in the stone rolling contest. I wasn’t as good as the younger people, but it was fun. I enjoyed the experience. Another opportunity was to take a traditional bamboo lunch box with you on an ancestral walk along a Jeju batdam road which gave participants a chance to experience a bit of Jeju’s culture. [INTERVIEW] Goh Duk-soo, Kim Shin-bok / Yongdam-dong It reminded me of my aunt. You’ll never know what it’s like until you try it. It’s something you have to taste yourself to know. The festival had a number of valuable seminars that distinguished it from other eat and drink events by giving a glimpse of Jeju’s traditional culture. It also provided an opportunity to discuss the preservation of Jeju’s stone walls and their cultural value. SYNC Jeong Kwang-joong / VP, Jeju National University When it comes to the designation of world cultural heritage, I would select Jeju’s stone walls as the top priority. [Camera] Hyeon Gwang-hoon Another characteristic of the four day festival was that it was focused on interacting with local residents rather than staging famous performers. [Reporter] Mike Balfour The Jeju Batdam Festival was an opportunity to learn of the Jeju’s people's lives and the importance of the island’s stone culture. Mike Balfour KCTV

  • Mandarin oranges ‘may help prevent diabetes’
  • Mandarin oranges ‘may help prevent diabetes’ Promising results from recent study New research suggests mandarin oranges may help lower blood sugar levels and therefore aid in weight loss and the prevention of diabetes. The Rural Development Institute’s Citrus Research Center teamed up with Jeju National University to test the effects of mandarin extract on obesity and insulin reduction in mice. Mice fed a high-fat diet with the extract exhibited a ten percent reduction in weight and a 28 percent reduction in fasting blood sugar levels compared to mice on a high-fat diet without the citrus extract. In addition, mice fed with citrus extract also exhibited about nine times as many protein factors that prevent fat buildup in their blood vessels and about 2.5 times as many in their liver. • ‘Gotjawal’ forests much younger than previously thought
  • ‘Gotjawal’ forests much younger than previously thought Formed about 10,000 years ago Researchers say Jeju’s “gotjawal” forests are much younger than they had thought. The Korea Forest Research Institute and Jeju’s World Natural Heritage Center began the process of carbon dating the sites last year. They determined the Aewol gotjawal to be 10,400 years old, the Hangyeong forest to be 6,000 years old, and the Gujwa-Seongsan “gotjawal” to be 9,400 years old. That’s around 25,000 years off previous estimates of the first forests forming 35,000 years ago. The forest research institute says the new information will help determine the reasons behind the forests’ formation and that it will give scientists a better opportunity to learn more about the unique characteristics of “gotjawal.”

  • KCTV: New Efforts to Preserve Korean Fir
  • Climate change and other factors have decimated stands of Korean firs on Hallasan Mountain, so eight organizations have banded together to try and preserve this one-of-a-kind tree. Mike Laidman has more. [slug] World’s only Korean fir forest on Hallasan Mountain While it has pointy needles, it’s still a handsome tree. The Korean fir, while unknown to many around the world, closely resembles a typical Christmas tree. The one and only forest of these Korean firs exists on Hallasan Mountain. [slug] Over 46% of Korean firs on Halla have died But now, due to ever-changing weather conditions, like drought and typhoons, the number of trees has been dropping rapidly. More than 46% of the Korean firs on the slopes of Hallasan Mountain are dead, and the species has been designated as “endangered” by the IUCN. [INTERVIEW] Koh Jung-kun / Jeju World Natural Heritage Center In the past two or three years, many Korean firs have been discovered dead in higher areas, like near the Seongpanak Trail, which is 1,700-1,800 meters above sea level. Now eight organizations, including the Jeju Provincial Office, the Korea Forest Research Institute, and the National Arboretum have stepped in, and signed an MOU to preserve the tree. Together, they will research the Korean firs themselves, their habitat, and harvest seeds. [INTERVIEW] Nam Sang-hyun / Korea Forest Research Institute I believe this collaboration will bring about great synergy if the eight organizations share their knowledge. Measures have also been set to manage the Korean firs via a more systematic approach. And with other Jeju plant species being recognized for their value, such as the Jeju broadleaf bamboo, researchers are recognizing the need to restore the Korean firs’ habitat to preserve it. [INTERVIEW] Jo Yong-chan / Korea National Arboretum It is necessary to revive the culture that led to the cultivation of land suitable to the Korean fir. Such practices were common long ago at higher elevations on Hallasan Mountain. [CAMERA] Moon Ho-seong But some say that it is impossible to preserve the Korean fir against the growing threat of climate change. And others suggest alternatives, like creating special laws to protect the Korean fir. [INTERVIEW] Lee Joong-hyo / National Institute of Ecology Appropriate laws would help promote better research and provide the necessary funding for this research. [reporter] Mike Laidman Already, almost half the Korean firs on Hallasan Mountain have withered and died. But with a careful and dedicated approach by concerned parties, they still might be saved.
