Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. It’s a mere day before Halloween, but there is still a complete dearth of scary movies in theatres. Sometimes traditional Halloween fare takes a few extra weeks, if not months, to open up here, so don’t lose hope just yet; there will be opportunities for a scare coming sometime! In the meantime, though, we’ll have to make due with a movie about being turned into an animal if you don’t find love. That’s a least a little scary, right? But first, a romantic comedy about driving. Some Halloween this is... [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Learning to Drive (2015, Isabel Coixet) A writer takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor. Learning to Drive is the kind of romantic comedy that lures you in with the promise of some laughs and a bit of consolation if your own love life is in the dumps. These movies usually aren't all that impressive and don’t leave an impression. Learning to Drive has a bit more clout, though. Wendy is a middle-aged book critic who is shattered when her husband Ted leaves her. In order to visit her daughter, who lives a ways away, Wendy begins taking driving lessons from Darwan an American citizen originally from India who makes a living as a cabbie and giving driving lessons. The two strike-up a friendship that helps her learn to take control of her life, and him adjust to his new life after an arranged marriage. Stars Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley provide strong performances, over top of what is a fairly predictable plot. Learning to Drive is a story of companionship, loneliness, resilience. It's small and artfully crafted, but resonates in some big ways. [Slug CG] The Lobster (2015, Yorgos Lanthimos) Single people must find a romantic partner at The Hotel in 45 days. The Lobster is by no means a scary movie, but its plot is undoubtedly a little...strange… In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or be transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. As strange as it is thrillingly ambitious, The Lobster is definitely an acquired taste. It’s a bit of everything - at times hilarious, especially in its first half-hour or so. Sometimes it's deeply disturbing and occasionally thought-provoking. For viewers with the fortitude to wade through the director’s offbeat humour and style, it should prove to be a savoury cinematic treat.

  • Jeju: A to Z: Autumn at Sangumburi Crater
  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker profiles an iconic autumn destination, the popular Sangumburi (산굼부리). This extinct volcanic crater is southeast of Jeju City, and its fields of are known to usher in fall on the island. The remarkably symmetrical crater of Sangumburi (산굼부리), an extinct volcano to the southeast of Jeju City, is a stunning visitor destination in more ways than one. [Slug CG] 2,000 m in circumference, comparable to Hallasan’s Baeknokdam Described as a kind of “natural stadium,” its structure is unique in Korea. Almost the diameter of the Baeknokdam (백록담) crater atop Hallasan Mountain, it is roughly 2,000 meters in circumference, 100 meters deep and 600 meters across. [Slug CG] 420 species of plants and animals Sangumburi crater is a densely packed habitat, home to about 420 species of plants and animals. Given their proximity and interactions, it’s a windfall for scientific research. [Slug CG] 550,000 visited in 2013 Though tourism and the environment usually are at odds, the site in and around the crater is protected from human encroachment. Its unique shape made it possible in 2013 for 550,000 people to walk or wheel up the gentle slope in a matter of minutes, with minimal impact on the environment. It was designated Natural Monument #263 in 1979. [Slug CG] Breathtaking vistas from the top Once you make it to the top of the crater, enjoy the fantastic vistas. If it’s a clear day, you can enjoy views of the ocean to the north. Many of the island’s volcanic cones, or oreum, which dot the island also come into view, and of course there is the breathtaking profile of Hallasan Mountain. Reporter ] Todd Thacker If you look to the east, even Seongsan Sunrise Peak can be seen to the far side of the island. Sangumburi isn’t the only place on the island to capture iconic images of Korea’s autumn pampas grass, but it might just be the most picturesque. Todd Thacker, KCTV
