Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Looming Autumn Typhoons
  • Looming Autumn Typhoons Locals are anxious with the looming typhoons as the island is expected to be influenced by several typhoons and storms this autumn. Farmers are vigilant as they've just sowed. Joseph Kim reports. This senior community center was devastated by an autumn storm in September last year. The building was inundated when torrential rain poured down. Area residents joined in the work of clearing the scattered debris. The building still has marks from the past flooding. This year's prolonged rainfall delayed repair work of the building until the end of this month. But the coming storms are worrying the community. Farmers are vigilant as they've just sowed their crops. Onion seedlings planted a few days ago are covered with nets. The nets are to protect seedlings from strong winds. Seedlings of cabbage, broccoli and kohlrabi are vulnerable to drenching rain. Prolonged periods of rain can cause root rot as roots can not get enough oxygen. Looming Autumn Typhoons Work is needed to remove standing or excess water from poorly drained lands when there is a downpour. But the flatland does not allow for the work. Prolonged periods of rainfall also influence outdoor grown mandarins. Excessive rain, especially in the fall when the fruit becomes sweet, lowers the sugar content. Locals are anxious about the unwelcome autumn storms which are coming back after a year.
