Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Waters Poisoned by Microplastics
  • Microplastic pollution in local waters is causing greater concern. Risks of serious health complications to both humans and marine animals have been correlated to the plastic debris, and the local community is voicing a need for stronger measures aimed at reducing them on the island. Mike Laidman reports. Report (서우봉) Seoubong Beach in (함덕) Hamdeok is one of Jeju island’s most recognisable beaches, but take a closer look, and you can easily see the tiny pieces of trash that litter the once-pristine sand. It is mostly debris from styrofoam buoys that has washed onto the beach. Over time, the garbage breaks into smaller and smaller pieces, finally becoming microplastics, harming the marine ecosystem. As the sand here is scooped up, tiny plastic flecks, pellets, and pieces of styrofoam - made this small by the relentless pounding of the sea - are found in abundance. It doesn’t take long for this sieve to reveal just how dirty the beach is. All the microplastics that can’t be scooped up eventually make their way into the marine food chain. Green Korea looked at three spots at the (함덕) Hamdeok, (사계) Sagye, and (김녕) Gimnyeong last month. There were over 1,000 pieces of microplastic found over a 50 by 50 centimeter square. Aquatic creatures end up eating the microplastics as they make their way up the food chain, with consumption by humans the final part of that journey. They can cause cancers if left to build up in the body. With microplastics posing a serious environmental and health problem, regulations on plastic production and the need to stop ocean dumping are becoming more and more pressing. Mike Laidman, KCTV

  • Land prices in Jeju Island fall for two consecutive years
  • Land prices in Jeju Island fall for two consecutive years Downturn in tourism, net inflow population are major factors Jeju Island is the only province in the country where land prices have fallen for the second consecutive year. According to the Korea Appraisal Board's Real Estate Statistics Information System, land prices in Jeju fell 1.6 percent in the first seven months of this year compared to last year. By region, the decline in the Seogwipo area as well as the old downtown areas in Jeju City, such as Yongdam-dong, Ildo 2-dong, and Geonip-dong, were the most noticeable, and the decline rate of the Samhwa district was moderate. The continued decline in land prices is attributed to the impact of the deteriorating tourism industry in the aftermath of COVID 19, as well as a decrease in net inflow population. 6.

  • Heightened Infection Prevention and Control during Chuseok
  • The province is ramping up efforts for infection prevention and control as some 300,000 people are expected to visit the island during the (추석) Chuseok holidays. Administrative measures have been issued that includes mandatory mask wearing for all tourists. Violators will face criminal penalties and will not be compensated by the government in the case of a COVID-19 infection. Mike Laidman reports. Nearly 300,000 visitors are expected in Jeju over the (추석) Chuseok holiday, as many on the mainland are choosing the island as their preferred holiday destination. In anticipation, the province has tightened up their infection prevention and control efforts. Jeju Province has issued an administrative measure, making wearing masks mandatory for all those people entering the island from September 26 through to October 4. Violators will face fines of up to 3 million won. Those entering who are found to have a temperature of 37.5 degrees or higher will be tested and then isolated at either a designated quarantine facility or pre-reserved guesthouses. Alongside the potential fines, the province will require that violators cover their own diagnosis and quarantine costs. The same will apply to someone making a false statement if they know they are infected. The range of areas where wearing masks is mandatory will be expanded. 11 more business categories, including ferries and pharmacies, will be added to the list of areas where the province has instituted a mandatory mask-wearing policy. There are already 48 businesses on the list, covering everything from wedding halls to traditional markets. Admission at spas and bathhouses will be controlled through body temperature checks. Visitors will also be required to register at these facilities. Those who refuse to have their temperature taken or give their personal information, such as a phone number, will face repercussions. The Jeju Municipal Police will send 100 police officers to 50 vulnerable facilities including guest houses, bars, and bowling alleys to make sure that they are all following quarantine measures over the holiday. Meanwhile, the island’s hospitals, public health centers, and coronavirus testing facilities will be providing their medical services over the Chuseok holiday to deal with the COVID-19 situation.
