Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Seoul to prevent excessive mask purchases
  • 2. Government to prevent excessive mask purchases Computer database to monitor customer purchases The government is implementing a new system to prevent people from purchasing an excessive number of masks at pharmacies. The government says they will strengthen their management so one person can only purchase a limited amount. The new system is similar to the 'medical safety services' used by pharmacies. The medical safety service is designed to prevent duplicate purchases of prescriptions. The government predicts that by including masks as one of the categories, this will prevent the purchase of multiple masks by people. 2.

  • 3 Hospitals Evacuated for Possible Mass Infection
  • The province has designated three local hospitals that deal with COVID-19 patients. Inpatients at the three hospitals with other diseases are being moved to other hospitals. The province is also expanding its workforce to implement virus testing and respond to emergency calls. Joseph Kim reports. A patient on the bed is being loaded onto the vehicle. The ward where the patient has stayed, becomes empty. To be prepared for possible mass infection of COVID-19, the province has ordered to vacate three designated hospitals. Inpatients of the three hospitals that will deal with patients infected with the virus are being transported to eight other hospitals including (연강) Yeonkang Hospital, Jeju (사랑) Sarang Nursing Hospital, (아라) Ara Nursing Hospital and (탑동) Tapdong Hospital. According to the order, the Jeju National University Hospital should vacate 110 beds. Inpatients are expressing complaints about the measure as they are forced to move to a new facility. The province asks for cooperation from inpatients and their families as the measure is needed to preemptively prepare for a possible mass infection in Jeju. The province promises that it will bring patients back to the hospital where they had originally stayed, once the outbreak subsides. Along with the hospital evacuation, the province is beefing up its workforce for COVID-19 testing as the demand for testing has soared. The demand for testing is exceeding the current capacity, and public veterinarians and aquaculture health experts are being deployed for virus testing. Members of the Korean Nurses Association and retired civil servants are dealing with emergency calls and visits by potential patients. Meanwhile, 27 persons confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 in Jeju, but registered in other cities by their address will not be officially managed by the province according to the rules of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which states that quarantine and monitoring should be made by the local governments of one’s registered address. However, the province will continue monitoring the 27 to keep the virus at bay. Joseph Kim, KCTV
