Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • COVID-19 Test Capacity Enhanced
  • Demand for COVID-19 testing has been soaring, as hundreds of worshipers of Sincheonji Church of Jesus have been infected with the virus. The province has added 6 more facilities that can collect clinical specimens to the existing 7 separate clinics and allocated more workers to the facilities. Todd Thacker reports. This is a seperate medical facility for potential COVID-19 patients at the Jeju City Public Health Center. A newly purchased X-ray generator will serve to test for the virus. Previously only seven medical facilities on the island, including one at Jeju National University Hospital, could collect clinical specimens. Now this is possible at other public health centers. As increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases are confirmed across the nation, demand for testing has soared. The province has added six public health centers to the list of dedicated clinics. Now, the island has 13 facilities that can take specimens from potential patients. Additionally, the province has trained 37 medical workers to implement the test. More than 600 tests for the deadly virus have been administered in Jeju since January 29th. That's nearly 22 tests per day. Right after Jeju's two consecutive COVID-19 cases were confirmed, more than 140 individuals sought testing in a single day. Members of the Sincheonji Church of Jesus have significantly added to the workload. More medical facilities and technicians are needed to keep up with testing. The Jeju Public Health and Environment Research Institute, which is responsible for analysing specimens and diagnosing the virus, is on 24-hour duty. Four employees from the Jeju Ocean and Fisheries Research Center and the Jeju Animal Hygiene Laboratory are also assigned to the institute. Testing capacity has increased to handle up to 100 individual specimens a day. In preparation for any potential mass infection scenarios, the institute has purchased a specimen analyzing machine and has diagnostic reagents and kits for 500 specimens at the ready.
