1. 2 Yemenis granted refugee status
50 given humanitarian permits, 22 refused stays
Two Yemenis have become the first citizens of their country to be granted asylum here.
The Jeju Immigration Service has released the results of its screening process of 85 Yemenis whose cases had been deferred.
In addition to the two who were granted refugee status, 50 were given humanitarian stay permits while 22 were refused any type of stay in Korea.
The two whose asylum claims were accepted were both journalists in their home country. Officials concluded that they likely faced possible persecution in Yemen including kidnapping Huthi because of critical reports they had written about Houthi rebels. That is why Jeju immigration officials granted them asylum here.
