Shipments of compressed waste from Jeju have been found in (광양) Gwangyang Port of South (전라) Jeolla Province, in addition to ports in (군산) Gunsan and the Philippines.

However, a considerable amount of compressed waste is still missing.

The governor and the Jeju City mayor apologized for the compressed waste disposal operations. But islanders are still disappointed.

Joseph Kim reports.

42,000 tons of compressed trash generated in Jeju have been carried out of the island since April 2015.

1,800 tons of garbage were sent to the Philippines and 8,600 tons were sent to (군산) Gunsan Port in (전라) Jeolla Province.

[slug] Governor and Jeju City mayor apologize at press conference

Governor Won Heeryong and the Jeju City mayor (고희범) Ko Hei-beom officially apologized for the trash disposal operations.

They acknowledge that they were not devoted to their roles in supervising the trash disposal.

Won Heeryong / Governor
I sincerely apologize for the improper trash disposal. I feel responsible for the poor supervision of the waste compression companies.

"이 문제로 심려를 끼쳐 드린데 대해 제주도민 여러분께 정중히 사과를 드립니다. 위탁업체에 대한 관리감독의 부실 책임 또한 통감합니다."

[slug] Province to investigate waste compression companies

The province says companies will be thoroughly investigated by the provincial office and its audit committee to identify the company’s waste disposal operations and that legal action should be taken if any unlawful activity is found.

[slug] Substandard cube fuel of compressed garbage to be thoroughly inspected

Governor Won also acknowledges that substandard cube fuel of compressed trash is the root of the issue, therefore he says his office will thoroughly inspect waste compression companies and correct improper operations.

The province has thus established a rule. It will dispose of 100 percent of household garbage generated here on the island.

We need to discuss on how to deal with the 51,000 tons of untreated compressed garbage which usually takes 2-3 years.

"지금 쌓여있는 (압축폐기물) 5만 1천 톤을 처리하려면 2~3년 걸릴 것이어서 그것에 대한 대책은 따로 논의를 해야 합니다."

Apologies were made somewhat late. The public’s distrust in the trash policies don’t appear to be improving.
