Price Growth Rate Highest in 13 Yrs

Shoppers browse through Jeju’s (동문) Dongmun Traditional Market, checking prices here and there as they go.
But skyrocketing prices mean that, more often than not, their purses and wallets remain firmly closed.

I’m here for groceries, but now I’m hesitating. Vegetable prices, like those for watercress, lettuce, and perilla leaves have hiked. The spiraling cost of food is hoisting us consumers hard.

The price of pork, which usually sat at around 30,000 won per kilogram, has now ballooned far beyond 40,000 won.

Pork prices are up between 60 and 70%. (How much is it per kilogram?) Between 45,000 and 48,000 won. I think it’s the highest price ever. It’s hard for both consumers and sellers.


Prices in Jeju are soaring.


The (호남) Honam Regional Statistics Office says that consumer prices in Jeju increased by 5.5 percent last month.
That’s the biggest jump in more than 13 years, ever since the 2008 financial crisis.
Consumer prices have now grown at a 5-point-something rate for two consecutive months.


The consumer sentiment index, which represents perceived prices, was at 109.16, up nearly 6 percent from the same period last year.

And prices are continuing to rise for most items except fresh food.

Manufactured goods, which includes gasoline and diesel, saw the consumer price index rise 9 percent from the same period last year - the highest among all sectors.
The service sector rose 3.5 percent, and agricultural, livestock, and fishery goods increased by 1.9 percent.

Among this last sector, prices of imported beef were up 17.8 percent, while pork was up 10 percent.


The Honam Regional Statistics Office says prices here have risen as the cost of many manufactured goods, including oil, have soared due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.


The office predicts that prices will continue to rise for the time being, due to a supply shortage of both raw materials and grain.



제주 소비자물가 상승률, 13년 만 최고치


한 손에 지갑을 든 채 장을 보기 위해 시장을 찾은 시민들.

곳곳을 둘러보며 물건을 사려다가도
생각보다 비싼 가격에
선뜻 지갑이 열리지 않습니다.

"일단은 (장보러 와도) 뭘 사야 되나 하고 망설여지는 것도 있고. 특히 채소가 많이 올랐어요. 미나리나 상추나 깻잎이나 모든 게. 하여튼 서민이 살기에는 좀 많이 힘든 것 같아요 물가가."

평소 1kg 당 3만 원 안팎에 팔리던 돼지고기도
어느새 4만 원을 훌쩍 넘었습니다.

"70%가 올라버렸지. 60~70%. (지금은 1kg당 얼마예요?) 지금 들어오는 단가가 4만 5천 원, 4만 8천 원. 여태껏 최악으로 (가격이) 올라버리니까.
서민들이 먹고 우리가 판매하는 데에 너무나 (힘들죠)."

제주 지역 물가가 크게 치솟고 있습니다.

호남지방통계청에 따르면
지난달 제주 지역 소비자물가지수 상승률은 5.5%.

지난 2008년 금융위기 이후
13년여 만에 최고치입니다.

지난 3월에 이어
두 달 연속 5%대 상승률이 이어지고 있는 겁니다.


지난달 제주 도민들의 체감 물가를 나타내는
생활물가지수는 109.16으로,
지난해 같은 기간보다 6% 가까이 올랐습니다.


신선식품을 제외한
대부분의 부문에서 물가오름세가 이어지고 있습니다.


특히 휘발유와 경유를 포함한
공업제품의 경우
지난해 같은 기간보다 9% 오르며
가장 큰 상승폭을 보였고,

서비스 품목은 3.5%,
농축수산물의 경우 1.9% 올랐습니다.

농축수산물 가운데는
수입쇠고기 가격이 17.8%,
돼지고기도 10% 오른 것으로 나타났습니다.


러시아 우크라이나 전쟁 여파로
석유류 등 공업 제품의 가격이 오르면서
물가가 전반적으로 따라 오른 것으로 분석됩니다.


통계청은 원자재와 곡물의 공급난 등으로
당분간 물가 오름세가
지속될 것으로 전망하고 있습니다.
