Secret Behind Blueberry Profits


This is a blueberry farm in (조천읍) Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.

With great care, workers pluck each perfectly ripened, deep crimson blueberry.


The farm began initial shipments late last month.
As for greenhouse blueberries, harvesting is feasible until the end of May or the start of June.


This winter, a lack of sunlight and high humidity worsened cases of ash mold disease.


As a result, a substantial drop of more than 30% in blueberry production is anticipated across farms in Jeju.

The temperature was high in January and February, and especially in February, there was a lot of rain. So, due to the bad weather, the blueberry harvest is expected to decrease by about 30%.

Due to a significant reduction in supply, the auction price of blueberries at this farm has recently risen from 80,000 won to 100,000 won per kg.


This farm stands out for receiving almost double the auction price compared to others.
The key to their success lies in catering to consumers' preference for variety.

After extensive research and experimentation, they discovered the so-called Eureka variety.
This variety is characterized by its large berries and high sweetness.
Its cultivation method is also suited to Jeju’s climate.

The variety determines the price, and in Jeju, there's generally one variety that is widely planted. That price has been fairly good, receiving a similar price nationwide, but we brought in a slightly better variety and made it adaptable to Jeju.

Thanks to its exceptional size and quality, this variety remains competitive even against cheaper foreign imports.

As shipments of Jeju-produced blueberries arrive earlier than those from other regions, they contribute significantly to setting higher prices for the fruit.

Despite the anticipated decline in Jeju blueberry production this year, farms with quality crops could encounter favorable pricing opportunities.




블루베리 높은 수익 비결은?


제주시 조천읍의 블루베리 비닐하우스 농가입니다.

검붉게 잘 익은 블루베리를 한알씩 정성껏 수확합니다.

지난달 말부터 첫 출하를 시작했는데
시설하우스 블루베리의 경우
5월말에서 6월초까지도 수확이 가능합니다.

올해는 일조량 부족과 겨울철 습도가 높아
잿빛곰팡이병이 유독 심했습니다.

이로 인해 도내 블루베리 농가 전체적으로
생산량이 30% 이상 감소할 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.

1~2월 기온이 높고 2월에 특히 강수량이 많았습니다. 그래서 날씨가 안 좋다 보니까 블루베리 수확량이 30% 정도 줄어들 것으로 (예상됩니다.)

공급량이 크게 줄어든 탓에
최근 이 농가의 블루베리 경매가격은
1kg당 8만원에서 10만원까지 올랐습니다.

특히 이 농가는
다른 농가에 비해 경매가격을 두배 가까이 받고 있는데
그 비결은
소비자들이 선호하는 품종에 있습니다.

오랜 노력끝에 가장 알이 굵고 당도가 높은 유레카 품종을 찾아
제주기후에 맞게 재배방식을 개발한 겁니다.

품종이 가격을 좌우하는데 제주도에서는 대체적으로 어떤 한 품종이 비교적 많이 심어져있거든요. 그 가격이 지금까지 괜찮은 가격으로 전국으로 비슷한 가격을 받고 있었는데 저희는 그거보다 조금 더 좋은 품종을 들여오고 그게 제주도에 정착할 수 있도록….

남다른 크기의 열매와 신선한 품질 덕분에
값싼 외국산에도 밀리지 않고 경쟁력을 갖추고 있습니다.

특히 다른 지역보다 출하가 빨라
높은 가격이 형성되는
제주산 블루베리의 가격을 이끄는 선도 농가 역할도 하고 있습니다.

올해 제주산 블루베리 생산량은 급감할 것으로 예상되지만
다소 높은 가격이 형성되면서
좋은 품질을 갖춘 농가에는 기회가 되고 있습니다.
