Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker has the second in a series of segments profiling a part of Jeju’s cultural and agricultural heritage. Jeju’s unique stone walls have for centuries protected islander’s homes, fields -- and as we’ll see today, gravesites. Sandam are the square edifices that enclose the grave mounds of traditional family plots, and they have both practical and symbolic uses. From the air, the island’s farmland looks like a jigsaw puzzle -- much of it family-owned for generations. In the Korean tradition of honoring one’s ancestors, up until quite recently one’s deceased elders were buried on or near these homesteads. [Slug CG] Rectangular walls protecting family burial mounds Sandam are the rectangular walls built around these burial mounds. In keeping with Jeju’s stone culture, they are built without mortar, and made with rocks readily found in the area. [Slug CG] Keep cattle out, protect against fire Not unlike the Batdam walls which surround the islander’s fields, Sandam have a practical function. They keep cattle away, and serve as a firewall if a wildfire sweeps through the area. [Slug CG] Small break in the wall allows access to the grave There is an interesting structural feature to the Sandam. Since it surrounds hallowed ground, a narrow break is purposefully built into the wall -- a simun (시문) or “door of the gods”. It is located on the right if the occupant is a man, and on the left if the departed is a woman. This symbolic door is how family members gain access to the burial mound, rather than stepping over the walls themselves. [Slug CG] Reference: Koreana, Summer 2001 In autumn, it is traditional for family members to gather from far and wide and visit these burial mounds to help trim the grass, clean up leaves in and around the Sandam, and then have a small ceremony to honor their elders. This tradition -- called Beolcho (벌초) -- is very strong on Jeju. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker Centuries of islanders spent their entire lives working these plots and raising families there.   • Kim Man-duk Memorial Hall donates 1,000 kg of rice to needy New contributions bring yearly total to 5,000 kg The Kim Man-duk Memorial Hall on Tuesday donated 1,000 kilograms of rice to the provincial government’s health and welfare bureau. The rice was collected through donations by visitors, Jeju residents, and people who live off the island. It will be delivered to childcare centers across the island. The Kim Man-duk Memorial Hall has been donating rice since earlier this year. It has given away 5,000 kilograms to people in need in 2015. 김만덕기념관, 나눔쌀 1천㎏ 기탁 김만덕기념관이 연말을 맞아 오늘(22일) 오후 제주특별자치도 보건복지여성국에 나눔쌀을 기탁했습니다 이번에 기탁한 쌀은 관람객과 도내·외 기부자들이 모은 쌀 1천 킬로그램으로 도내 아동보육시설 등에 전달될 예정입니다. 한편, 김만덕기념관은 지난 5월 쌀 2천 킬로그램을 시작으로 지금까지 5천 킬로그램의 쌀을 어려운 가구에 전달했습니다.

  • All the rain we’ve been having has delayed the mandarin harvest at many groves. This is causing the fruit to go bad and farmers are desperate to finish picking their crop. The Marine Corps heard about the situation and decided to lend a helping hand. Mike Laidman reports. [slug] Sanghyo-dong, Seogwipo At this mandarin farm in Seogwipo, a special group of people have arrived to help out. It’s the ROK Marine Corps. [slug] 9th Marine Brigade helps pick fruit They have come to help pick fruit, something that has been heavily delayed due to frequent rains. If the fruit is left on the trees too long, it rots, leading to more problems. This is the first time picking mandarins for many of these marines, but they do their best to help the farmers get as much fruit off the trees as they can. The Marine Corps is a part of every step along the way in harvesting the oranges. They pick the fruit, fill baskets, and then load them onto vehicles. [camera] Hyeon Gwang-hoon But it is not only the harvest with which they are helping. They add life to a farm that had been quiet before their arrival. The farmers are happy to have people with whom to talk - it’s as if they are working alongside their own children. INTERVIEW Go Jeong-ja / Mandarin grower We would normally have to spend a lot of money to get people to help. But even that wasn’t easy this time. We had almost given up, but then five marines came to our farm and they’ve been so much help. <인터뷰 : 고정자 / 감귤재배 농민> "울며 불며 농사해봐야 인부 값만 들어가고. 그렇다고 인부를 고용하면 좋지만 그 것도 안되고. 그래서 너무너무 힘든데 그래도 오늘 군인아저씨들 -----수퍼체인지----- 5명 보내주니까 많이 협조가 되는 것 같습니다."   • Annual visitor tally at Udo hits 2 million for first time Total up 32% compared to last year For the first time ever, over two million people have visited Udo, the small island off Jeju, in one year. The provincial government said Tuesday that the tally as of December 20th was two million three thousand. That’s 32 percent, or 520,000 people, more than at the same time last year. Earnings from admissions fees increased 38 percent to over 2.2 billion won. The island of Udo was designated a provincial marine park in 2008. 우도 탐방객 사상 첫 200만 돌파 섬속의 섬 우도를 찾은 탐방객이 사상 처음 200만 명을 넘어섰습니다. 제주시에 따르면 올들어 지난 20일까지 우도해양도립공원을 찾은 탐방객은 200만 3천여 명으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 52만명, 32% 증가했습니다. 이에 따른 입장료 수입도 22억8천여 만원으로 지난해 보다 38% 증가했습니다. 우도가 지난 2008년 해양도립공원으로 지정된 이후 탐방객 200만 명을 돌파하기는 이번이 처음입니다.

  • Bigger market for Jeju’s agricultural specialties Four-way agreement signed Monday The provincial government, the Agricultural and Food Products Cooperative Headquarters, Nonghyup Jeju, and Homeplus signed an agreement Monday to expand sales of Jeju’s agricultural specialties. Each of the parties will now work together to promote and expand the distribution of key products. Homeplus, the retail chain owned by Tesco, has also agreed to allocate more space in its stores to Jeju specialties.   • Jeju’s “haenyeo,” or female sea divers have been designated as Korea’s first Nationally Important Marine Heritage. This means systematic plans will be drawn up and implemented in order to preserve and manage their unique customs. Joseph Kim reports. Jeju haenyeo… or female sea divers represent a way of life for the generations of locals who have called the island home. They take only what the sea offers them, one long breath at a time. [slug] ‘Haenyeo’ designated Nationally Important Marine Heritage Now they have been designated Korea’s first Nationally Important Marine Heritage. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries made the announcement on Wednesday (December 16th) after a final meeting between members of the Ministry’s deliberation committee. [camera] Kim Seung-cheol Jeju haenyeo scored high in the Ministry’s evaluation of its global scarcity and unique communal culture… as well as its high value in the industries of culture and tourism. INTERVIEW Kim Woo-nam / National Assembly lawmaker Haenyeo have their own unique culture and have played a pivotal part in shaping the local lifestyle.   • Navy’s 7th Task Flotilla completes relocation to Jeju Part of Submarine Force Command finished move Sunday The Navy’s 7th Task Flotilla has finished relocating to the Jeju naval base, which will also serve as a civilian port. The Navy announced on Tuesday that all personnel are now stationed at their new base in Gangjeong. This comes after part of the Submarine Force Command completed its relocation to the same base from Jinhae on Sunday. A 7,600-ton aegis destroyer and some 20 other warships will be permanently stationed at the base. 해군 제7기동전단 민군복합항 이전 완료 제주민군복합형관광미항에 해군 제7기동전단 이전작업이 마무리됐습니다. 해군은 오늘(22일) 오전 제7기동전단장을 비롯한 전단 지휘부의 민군복합항 입항을 끝으로 해군 전력 이전을 모두 마쳤다고 밝혔습니다. 이보다 앞서 수중작전을 수행하는 제93 잠수함전대는 지난 20일 기존 진해기지에서 민군복합항으로 이전했습니다. 해군 제7기동전단은 7천600톤 급 이지스구축함인 세종대왕급과 4천400톤급 구축함인 충무공이순신급 등의 전력을 갖추게 됐습니다.

  • 150,000 to visit Jeju over Christmas 23% more than last year Around 150,000 travelers are expected to visit Jeju over the Christmas holiday. The Jeju Tourism Association said Tuesday that around 150,000 people had made reservations to travel to Jeju from Christmas Eve, which is Thursday, through Sunday. That’s 23 percent more than a year ago. Tickets on all domestic flights over the period are 82 percent booked. 크리스마스 연휴, 관광객 15만 명 입도 크리스마스 연휴동안 관광객 15만 명이 제주를 찾을 전망입니다. 제주특별자치도관광협회에 따르면 크리스마스이브인 오는 24일부터 27일까지 최대 나흘동안 이어지는 연휴동안 제주를 찾는 관광객은 15만 명에 이를 것으로 전망했습니다. 이는 지난해 같은 기간보다 23퍼센트 증가한 것 입니다. 한편, 이번 크리스마스 연휴기간 운항되는 국내선 항공편수는 특별기를 포함해 840편으로 현재 82퍼센트의 예약률을 보이고 있습니다.
