Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Floorball Competition Held in Jeju These floorball athletes are in the middle of training. The top-ranked national floorball team of the Czech Republic is closely observing the training session. The team notes key points that players have to pay attention to and teaches difficult skills to the Korean players who participate in the international competition. This is a coaching clinic organized as the pre-event of the 2022 Jeju International Floorball Open Championships. Professional foreign players will be competing and there is prize money on offer to successful teams. The competition, which was held at Halla Gymnasium and the gymnasium of Halla Middle School from the 26th to 28th, had more than 700 players of 22 men’s and women’s teams from 11 countries, including Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Switzerland. As the event was held for the first time in three years due to the pandemic and is the only such international competition held in Korea, Korean floorball clubs were highly interested in the competition. During the last competition held prior to the pandemic, one Jeju women’s team and one men’s team took runner-up spots in surprise results.   • Digital Kiosks Anyone Can Use Older students sit around a classroom. They access the virtual ticket reservation site with their smartphones to book a flight. After completing the reservation, they move to the digital kiosk provided in the classroom to move on to the ticketing process. This is a part of a program organized by Seogwipo City in an attempt to bridge the digital gap. Kim Min-hye / Instructor The training program includes lectures on how to use kiosks, smartphones and ATM's special functions for the elderly. The goal of the lecture is to let them do it themselves. As the most challenging part for the seniors is to order at a restaurant with a kiosk, we will spend more time on it. As kiosks are replacing cashiers at airports, stores, government offices as well as restaurants and cafes, trainees are enthusiastic about the lecture. The elderly students ask lots of questions. They are getting a little closer to the new culture by learning. The lecture is not just about how to select things at a digital kiosk, but also about situations that can embarrass the elderly, such as the cancellation of orders, change of order quantity, and classification of warm and cold drinks. The trainees' response is very positive. Park In-hak / Trainee from Hogeun-dong, Seogwipo City I become embarrassed whenever I am faced with a kiosk. I try to do it quickly as other guests behind me are waiting, but I become frozen. At the hospital, I had to line up to pay a cashier. But now I can pay with a kiosk without waiting. After the classroom lectures, the trainees will go to real places that utilize kiosks, like a restaurant as field training. Kim Yeong-ju / Seogwipo City Lifelong Learning Center Digital devices are used a lot in everyday life. We provide hands-on education for those who have difficulty using smartphones, ATMs, and kiosks. We're investigating the demand for the training in rural areas, and if there is a request, we will work together to offer the lectures. As Seogwipo City has entered a super-aged society, the digital training for the elderly who are not familiar with using digital devices is receiving a positive response.   • Cool Down to Jeju Housing Market The apartment prices in Jeju are finally showing a cool down in prices. According to the Korea Real Estate Agency, apartment sales prices in Jeju City fell 0.05 percent in the third week of August, halting the upward trend for the first time since October 2020. The 66 square meter Booyoung 3 Cha apartment in Samhwa, Jeju City, was sold at 450 million won on the 8th, down more than 80 million won from the previous high of 535 million won. The decline in prices is attributed to interest rate hikes and concerns over the high point of housing prices in the Seoul metropolitan area. 제주 아파트가격 상승세 1년10개월 만에 꺾여 고공행진을 보여왔던 제주지역 아파트 가격 상승세가 꺾였습니다. 한국부동산원에 따르면 8월 셋째 주 제주시 아파트 매매가격은 0.05% 하락해 지난 2020년 10월 이후 1년 10개월 만에 상승세가 멈췄습니다. 제주시 삼화지역 부영3차 전용 66㎡는 지난 8일 종전 최고가인 5억3천5백만원보다 8천만원 넘게 하락한 4억5천만원에 거래됐습니다. 이 같은 아파트 가격 하락세는 금리 인상과 수도권 집값 고점 우려 등이 영향을 미친 것으로 분석되고 있습니다.

The Province has been offering onsite discounts for certain stores since the 10th promoting use of benefits, which have tripled from April with an average of 7,500 people per day for a week, three times more than April. Currently, merchants with less than 1 billion annual sales offer a 5% discount for onsite purchases, while traditional markets, shopping malls, low-cost stores, and community stores provide a 10% discount. The governor held a press conference on the morning of the 23rd and said he made a bold decision to recruit people centered leaders for the positions. He added that he made the decision after much thought and would take responsibility for the decision made. This training is for people settling in Jeju to take up farming who have no previous agricultural background and is designed to provide agricultural training on the cultivation of crops that are suitable for climates in the eastern region.
