Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

Prices for agricultural and marine products were up 6.3 percent, while industrial goods were 2.2 percent more expensive. They also expressed their support for an amendment to the April 3rd Incident Special Law that would nullify military courts’ convictions. Provincial officials say the average water level in 68 observation wells is 14.76 meters. That’s two meters higher than at this time last year, but it’s still 0.55 meters below average. Some areas of Seogwipo are especially dry: the well in (회수) Hoesu is 11.3 meters below normal, another in (상예) Sangye is 9.6 meters lower than average. The province says it has increased its monitoring of the situation. The island is still feeling the effects of last year’s severe drought.   • It’s been one year since the island’s public transport system was overhauled. The changes cost over 140 billion won, but buses are now running faster, and the tickets for them are cheaper. Mike Balfour reports. The public transportation system was overhauled last year, the biggest changes in 30 years. The province took over the bus operation from a private firm and spent more than 140 billion won on the reforms over the last 12 months. 65 percent of the budget was used to buy new buses and hire drivers. 51 billion won was spent for bus station construction and operation. [slug] ‘Positive results from public transport changes’ Although the reforms caused controversy over the excessive benefits to bus operators, indicators are showing positive changes. The number of daily passengers has increased 11.4 percent to 170,000. The rate of transportation card use has also grown from 66 to 82 percent. As bus fares were set at 1,200 won, regardless of distance, riders were able to save about 30 billion won in transportation expenses. That works out to approximately 43,000 won in savings per resident on average over the last 12 months. [slug] 28% more bus passengers Since the introduction of the central bus lanes, the number of bus passengers has grown 28 percent. The average speed on the central bus lanes between (광양) Gwangyang and (아라) Ara has increased over 70 percent. [slug] Public transport use ratio expected to reach national average in 2020 The province expects that the public transport use ratio will reach the national average in 2020 when the island’s public bus system stabilizes. The public transport use ratio in Jeju is currently the lowest in the nation. The JTO started running advertisements Monday in Osaka Station, Kyoto Station, and Kobe Station. The ads feature images of Jeju tourism, and the campaign will last for one week. Officials say the ads pointedly promote the direct flight service available between Jeju and Osaka, which they hope will have real effects in encouraging more Japanese to visit. The cutoff time for reaching the control station on the Witse Oreum Trail is 1:30, while hikers on the Seongpanak Trail have to make it to the Azalea Field by 12:30 in the afternoon, rather than 1 p.m. Finally, the cutoff time for passing the Donnaeko Info Center has gone from 11 a.m. to 10:30 in the morning, and it has gone from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the ticket office on the (어승생악) Eoseungsaengak Trail. 이달부터 한라산 입·하산 시간 조정 이달부터 한라산국립공원 입산과 하산시간이 조정됩니다. 한라산국립공원관리소에 따르면 어리목과 영실코스의 경우 매표소와 통제소를 기준으로 현재 오후 3시에서 2시로 조정됩니다. 윗세오름 통제소는 1시 30분으로, 성판악코스 진달래밭은 오후 1시에서 12시 30분으로 앞당겨집니다. 또 돈내코 코스 안내소는 오전 11시에서 10시 30분으로 어승생악코스의 매표소는 오후 6시에서 5시로 각각 조정됩니다.

Rates will be roughly 80 percent of what other carriers charge. Service will begin on the Jeju-Gimpo route. When and if that stabilizes, Jeju Air will expand the service to other routes. Local officials say the long heat wave this past summer kept many people away from Jeju’s beaches. 올 여름 해수욕장 이용객 244만 명…12% 감소 제주도내 해수욕장이 2일 일제히 폐장한 가운데 이용객이 지난해보다 10% 이상 감소했습니다. 제주특별자치도에 따르면 올해 도내 지정해수욕장 11곳의 이용객은 244만 명으로 지난해 278만 명보다 34만 명, 12% 줄었습니다. 해수욕장 별로는 함덕이 지난해 41만 명에서 올해 68만 명으로 늘어난 반면 협재는 23만 명, 중문은 10만 명 이상 감소했습니다. 제주도는 올 여름 기승을 부린 폭염이 장기간 이어지는 등 기후적 요인으로 이용객이 줄어든 것으로 분석했습니다.
