Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Film Focus
  • [Anchor] It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] This weekend, and the next, are going to be great if you’re into imagination, quality, suspense, fun, drama...do I need go on? There’s only one new release this weekend, but it’s a big one - Marvel’s Black Panther. As such, all other movies are giving it a wide berth, and smartly so, for it is turning into one of the best-rated superhero movies ever. And opening next weekend is The Shape of Water, a fantasy-drama from celebrated director Guillermo del Toro. So in short, two great options over what are shaping up to be two great weekends. Let’s slip into our black spandex suits and dive in. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Black Panther (2018, Ryan Coogler) T’Challa returns home to Wakanda to take his place as king. Black Panther follows T'Challa who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T'Challa's mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk. We’re really getting to the point where viewers who aren’t at least somewhat invested in the Marvel universe are going to start feeling pretty lost when it comes to the latest movies in the series. Black Panther requires having seen the above Civil War, as well as Avengers: Age of Ultron, to really understand what’s going on. But luckily, most everyone has seen these movies. Black Panther is a new breed of superhero movie - one that elevates the form to thrilling new heights while telling one of Marvel’s most absorbing stories and introducing some of its most fully realized characters. [Slug CG] The Shape of Water (2017, Guillermo del Toro) A janitor develops a bond with a creature at a research lab. The Shape of Water is set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda discover a secret classified experiment. Essentially a different (read: very different) take on the classic Beauty and the Beast tale, The Shape of Water is a lovely, empathetic tribute to Old Hollywood, monster movies, outsiders, and love that could only come from the mind of del Toro. It’s visually distinctive, a common theme for del Toro’s films, is scored wonderfully, and features a beautiful performance by Sally Hawkins. Anyone looking for a beautiful, moving tale about a woman’s romance with a secret fishman will be well rewarded here. Seriously.

  • KCTV: Potholed Roads
  • The unseasonably wintry weather earlier this month and last left many local roads in a terrible state. Mike Balfour reports. Report [Slug] Ora-dong, Jeju City On many of Jeju’s streets the results of a cold winter are evident. On road surfaces cracks are visible. Potholes and craters have also appeared. It looks like a bombed area in miniature.. In another location potholes and fragments of asphalt fragments litter the road. Vehicles rattle and shake negotiating the holes and debris. Drivers struggle to avoid the obstacles. INTERVIEW Oh Man-cheol / Resident of Hwabuk-dong, Jeju City There are a lot of potholes. It’s a really bumpy ride...the roads are not being properly maintained. <인터뷰: 오만철 / 제주시 화북동> "패인 곳이 많아요. 차들이 운행을 하다 보면 흔들리는 정도가 심하잖아요. 도로가 지금 제대로 돼 있지 않은 것 같아요." Water from melting snow seeps into cracks in the pavement. When the temperature drops below zero, the water freezes and expands, exerting pressure on the pavement. It widens the cracks, and when the temperature rises above freezing, the ice thaws, allowing the water to seep further into the cracks. As this process of freezing and thawing repeats, the pavement begins to weaken and eventually breaks apart. [slug] Potholes can cause car accidents Ice melt including calcium chloride exacerbates the problem. Vehicle snow chains eat away the pavement. Potholes increase the potential for accidents. Drivers may swerve quickly or suddenly stop to avoid the potholes. INTERVIEW Jang Yu-ri / Korea Road Traffic Authority Drivers should drive slowly and keep a safe distance from the car in front because other vehicles could make abrupt stops on the rough roads. <인터뷰: 장유리 / 도로교통공단 교수> "도로 상태를 정확히 확인하지 못할 경우 돌발 상황이 발생할 수 있기 때문에 속도를 줄여주시고 안전거리를 확보해 주셔야 합니다."
